Elementary School Gets Rid of Hot Lunch, Feeds Students Moldy Turkey Sandwiches Instead

  • an elementary school student eating hot lunch, which won't be available to him if his school switches to exclusively serving cold lunches during lunchtime.
  • The elementary school where I teach is getting rid of hot lunch for all students

I teach at a title 1 school with a very high number of homeless students. We were fortunate to have had free lunches for all students in our district and they were pretty high
  • quality too (sambusas, tacos, chicken alfredo. No weird plastic pizzas or mystery mush like I had). The kids still need to enter a lunch number when they get their food
  • as a way to track how many students are getting school lunch. This year we were super understaffed and so did not have anyone monitoring if kids typed
  • in their number. As a result the system sees it as half our students eating home lunch. Instead of looking into this (or reducing the 6 figure bonuses they get
  • each year), the district decided our school must not need hot lunches anymore. Next year we will only be offering prepacked cold lunch to save money.
  • Fun facts about our cold lunches: 1. There is always at least 1 moldy lunch out of the bunch 2. The turkey sandwich
  • A moldy orange between two fresh oranges
  • tastes really weird even when it isn't moldy 3. We often run out before everyone has had a chance to eat! Twice last year my team had to convince the principal to
  • order food as a last minute lunch replacement since there wasn't enough school lunch for everyone! Other schools (including ones in very rich
  • neighborhoods) will still get hot lunch. We aren't. the only school getting stuck with cold lunch, but it's extra frustrating when so many of our students don't have easy access to
  • kids at another school eating their hot lunch because their district didn't cut the funds necessary for hot lunch.
  • food outside of school. We live in a nightmare dystopia where bonuses matter more than children having nutritious foods.
  • teachingbeinghuman Sometimes I wish the system allowed teachers to report school administrators to cps- because what else is this than child neglect?
  • kitkattmarie OP It's not even admin. Our principal is pred about it! This was a district level budgeting decision. I have made sure EVERYONE around me (education or otherwise) knows this is happening. It's disgusting and absolutely neglectful!
  • aopps42 Someone needs to let the local media know.
  • FLBirdie The local media will (pardon the pun) eat this up. These are the kinds of stories they like to dig into, especially since children are involved. But before you go to the press, if you have a union, check with them about whistleblower-type accusations and protections. You don't deserve to lose your job (and the children don't deserve to lose a good teacher) over this issue.
  • nuktukheroofthesouth This feels like the rare rare appropriate situation to weaponize parents. I teach in a title I high school with a depressingly large percentage of totally apathetic parents, but even we have a handful of parents who would spearhead going to the media in a heartbeat with a discreet whisper. I'm lucky enough to have usually supportive admin and a school with minimal drama by title I standards, but I definitely know who those parents would be if needed.
  • DilbertHigh Our school has had the kitchen delayed many times, supposedly because of low demand. However, currently most kids skip lunch because the prepackaged lunches ash_l. The district doesn't view kids not eating as an issue, they view it as a lack of demand. It is disgusting because it impacts some of the poorest are communities most when they do this sh, and they know it.
  • kitkattmarie OP Exactly!!! I wish they would come to our schools and eat these nasty a lunches themselves. This year the district office got a sparkling water dispenser installed. Some schools in our district don't have AC
  • Substantial Sea7327 my mom was a beloved cafeteria lady for her elementary school. I used to hear lots of stories when she arrived home from work. I know what kind of sh : you deal with behind the scenes and I'm sorry. the free lunches for all students is great because cafeteria workers won't have to face that moral dilemma of "do I risk getting fired for feeding this 6 year old when they don't have money in their account?" district is being really stupid for not listening to the workers here.
