One thing that cooking has taught me is that confidence and skill are not always the same thing. There have been plenty of occasions when I walked into the kitchen feeling like a celebrity chef, only to discover thirty minutes later that I had misread the recipe or forgotten a key ingredient. The confidence was there. The results, unfortunately, were not.

Of course, the thing that keeps me coming back to cooking is the fact that with every failed recipe, I learn a lot. Sure, there're some moments when dinner will turn into Chinese takeout, or situations when the oven may explode. But no matter the disaster created, each of these scenarios will eventually become a funny story that's more entertaining than the meals that could turn out right.
