I was working in retail for low pay while trying to find a job in my real field. And finally, I got an offer for something in my field.
  • I went in yesterday intending to give them a respectful ten days' notice. As soon as the manager found out, his attitude changed and he got rude, and he kept yelling at me that I was "leaving them in the middle of things" and that I had ruined the schedule, and he raised his voice at me next to the cashier while customers were standing there.
  • So I told him: "Fine, forget it, I'm done now." I took off the badge and walked out in the middle of the shift. They don't give people any heads-up when they cut their hours or fire them. Why am I supposed to be polite when he doesn't know how to handle a resignation like a decent human being?
  • I've already gotten messages asking if I'm coming back to finish the rest of the week or not. Of course not. I wish I'd left weeks ago.

  • Just_Bz77 I don't know how big the retailer you work for is, but I would send a message to HR letting them know what happened. Telling them you handed over a letter of resignation and that the manager was yelling and degrading you in front of coworkers and customers. You elected not to finish the shift
  • because you were distraught. And you do not wish to finish the 10 days you wrote in your letter. Attach the letter and bcc yourself. This way you have a record of what happened and know they have a copy. This may come in handy in the future.
  • bobfromsanluis Giving any notice of quitting is a courtesy that is supposed to help the employer find someone to replace you as you're leaving. In this instance, you handled this the only way you could and still retain your dignity. As for your ex boss,
  • play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Very rude of them to demean you in front of other employees, but doubly so for doing so in front of customers. Sounds like a complete asshat.
  • johnmh71 This is why I have learned to be very picky when it comes to giving notice. Not every job deserves one.
  • Amazing-Temporary-20 As a manager in a similar field he is an *sshole. You did the right thing. It REALLY sucks when someone quits. Finding good employees for a minimum wage job is not easy. But you went above and beyond to give him 2 weeks and he responds like that? Nah.
  • dutycalls 1776 hell yeah good for you. trying to do them a solid by providing notice of intention to leave and they react like that? pound sand clowns...now they can figure it out without you! good luck at the new venture!
  • Quiet Comfort_664 Your manager got what he deserved.
  • No-Pressure2287 He thought of you as a possession.
  • pegwinn That is the way. And I'm a manager.
