Wife offers to help cook on family vacation, sister-in-law critiques every step instead of enjoying the last day together: ‘She insisted she needed to empty the fridge’

Frustrated woman reflecting after a tense family disagreement.
My husband, son and I went to visit his parents. We stay at a nearby campsite. We own a boat and keep it at thier house and this was last day of vacation. We got a text from sister-in- law if we were going on boat, we replied yes, we'd be there in 30 min.
When we arrived 30 minutes later, SIL, her son and MIL were cooking "every vegetable in the kitchen" so they don't go bad when we leave. Her son said they were prepping everything so Gramma can come with
us. I was annoyed - in my opinion let's go have fun if the food goes bad then it goes bad. We only have 1 more day together, until next summer.
Among other things she was making a carrot cake from scratch. I asked if I could help. Hoping to get this done as fast as possible. So they said chop the nuts. I asked how big, and was told it didn't matter. So I used my
measuring cup and pushed down. I do it all the time if you don't need uniform sizes it's a fast way to chop your nuts. Then I was told I should use a knife, I asked what size she wanted the nuts and told again it did
t matter. So I said this is faster and easier and continued. She again tried to explain slicing with a knife. I asked do you want them more uniform? Answer from her was " well no". Since I wanted to get in the boat, I said, in that case this works fine, so I'll finish with what I'm doing. My Words were
crisp, but I had asked What the end product should look like and she didn't care about that, she just wanted to tell me how she wanted me to do it, which I found highly annoying. I finished the nuts, cleaned them up, since my nephew is highly
allergic (don't ask why she even has them in food she's making) and left. Yet my husband said I was the one who made it uncomfortable and he told me his sister agreed.
I don't know, I found it a manipulative way for everyone to do what she wants them to do, which was cook with her instead of go on the boat. She was told just come on the boat Grandpa will make ribs and
we'll make a salad to go with it. But instead of spending time with her grandson who she sees for one week a year she insisted she needed to empty The fridge.
Family members preparing food together in the kitchen.
lainmelle ESH. It sounds like neither of y'all communicated with each other well on what you actually wanted and instead got passive aggressive with each other. And maybe this is my bias but I truly truly hate food waste as someone who grew up very food insecure.
Major_Zucchini5315 Soft YTA. They asked you to chop the nuts. Pressing them with a measuring cup is going to likely smash them more than chop. They are very different and may behave differently when baked. I don't think this is micromanaging. You asked how you could help, they told you and you decided to do something different.
NorthOfLilac ESH. I understand trying to make a point. But you continued to do something that was disliked when it was just as easy to follow instructions. To aggravate someone when you know it is grinding their gears, simply to make your point, I don't think you are faultless.
jcquarto I think you're more concerned with being right than it getting it right. Chop the nuts the way the person you're helping wants. Tune out and think about other stuff, get it done, then go do something else useful. You can be The Boss next summer when you start cooking/baking first.
Maximum-Eye-3712 ESH. Each person had their own agenda and got annoyed that their agenda wasn't shared by others.
Family boat outing on a sunny day with a lunchbox.
Throwway_queer None of this made sense until you said her literal child has an allergy to them. If the knife was already compromised that it makes sense to use that. You forced her to have to sanitize a whole other item and when you are batch cooking to try and use ingredients before they go bad, another thing on the list is annoying as h_ |I. Ytj.
jolard ESH. This family sounds awful from every angle, lol.
grimmistired Why would you ask to help and then do it your own way? YTA
02liveonsugarmt This is a great example of the double bind used by people who passive aggressive. You were in a no win situation. The best thing is to walk away. Spend your last day without the control freaks.
RubAffectionate762 Soft YTA, You asked how they wanted the nuts, got told it didn't matter, then got micromanaged anyway. Annoying, yes. But pushing back hard in someone else's kitchen made it uncomfortable. Next time just do it their way and get to the boat faster.
