Family refuses to keep lending their car to cousin for 10-minute drives despite him owning a scooter, cousin turns the confrontation into a defense of his 'honor': 'You're attacking my character'

  • Frustrated young woman reacting after setting a firm boundary with a demanding family member.
  • My cousin has made a habit of borrowing our family car, mostly to take his girlfriend out or run small errands. My family is usually pretty polite and conflict-averse (classic eastern harmony bs), so
  • no one has ever put a hard stop to it until today. (The country | live in mostly ride scooter or moped instead of car due to it being more convenient)
  • Also a bit of context, my dad has been lending our family car to my cousin multiple times, we usually just complain slightly, but what if there's an accident? Is the cousin
  • able to afford it? Or will just shrug it off saying he doesn't have money and just a poor guy? And I literally can't take it anymore and confronted him.
  • Today, he came over to borrow the car again. However, His destination was literally 10 to 15 minutes away, and he owns a scooter at home. The sole reason he wanted our car was because
  • "it's hot outside". Mind you, the time of his borrowing is roughly evening, close to dinner time so the sun is already setting.
  • I finally snapped and confronted him a direct text calling him out that it's embarrassing to keep taking advantage of us when his family has cars, he has a scooter,
  • and his trip is minutes away. I told him to figure out his own transportation from now on and stop asking us.
  • Instead of just acknowledging that taking a car for a 10-minute trip to avoid the heat is ridiculous, he sent back a massive wall of text defending his "honor":
  • 1. Claimed he "isn't a freeloading person." 2. Said he offered my dad gas money multiple times in the past (which my dad turned down out of family politeness, again, eastern harmony bs), so therefore he "isn't taking advantage."
  • 3. Ignored the fact that he literally had a scooter at home and chose to inconvenience us for 10 minutes of AC ride with his girlfriend.
  • 4. Said he "can't accept" being called someone who takes advantage of others, completely shifting the entire argument to his ego and intentions rather than his actions.
  • It's amazing how someone who regularly relies on other people's assets can turn a simple "use your own scooter" into a defense of their personal integrity just to avoid admitting they were being lazy.
  • Person standing next to a scooter, an available alternative to using a borrowed family car.
  • At least the free car service is officially closed. (Hopefully)
  • I'm just worried as my dad gets older my cousin will exploit or manipulate my dad even more, and god knows what'll happen if he start asking my dad for money and I'm not there to say no.
  • Young man driving a car, borrowing a family vehicle for short trips.
  • Confident-Skin-6462 is he on the insurance? does he pay his share?
  • YeshuasBanana Hammock "Sorry, I lost my keys, homie"
  • ThisGuy2319 He offers money, okay cool. You start taking the payments personally and see how fast he no longer wants to borrow it.
  • Zealousideal-Cod-924 You did it wrong. You made it about him, which gave him the opportunity to respond and defend himself. You should have said something like "Hey cousin, we're going to start reducing wear and tear on our car, so we won't be lending it out anymore. Hope you're having a nice day."
  • TitaniaT-Rex What's his reason for not using one of his family's cars?
  • uncoilingelf "Family car" whoever pays for the car gets to decide. If dad doesnt mind... you need to get over it. Your cousin getting/dropping the keys takes 30 seconds. He's allowed to ask if its something thats been happening for a while.
