Work ethic is a very complicated field in the workplace environment, since a lot is going on. This gets especially tricky when we talk about promotions: some people would feel entitled to earn a higher role, when the company may not feel the same way. That's exactly what happened to this man.
After finding out a management position was being opened, he messaged HR and told them to consider his name. In his mind, he was a top-performing employee and got along with every team member in his department, so the odds of him getting promoted were high.

I don't blame the guy for deciding to move on… maybe I would have done the same thing. What's the point of working as hard as possible if, at the end of the day, they will decide to hire an outsider who has no experience in the field? And let me add: it was very likely that it would have been the one who would have to train the new manager and teach her everything about the industry, and that's just not fair at all.

Redditors really cheered the OP here. They said he did well in quitting because it's nonsense that the company expects loyalty instead of giving him what he deserves. And they also said something very interesting: if the new manager is feeling like a failure before she even starts because he's leaving, then the decision to hire her was wrong all this time.
