Boss denies employee’s bereavement leave, schedules "mandatory fun" team event after working hours instead

Employees wear party hats at an after-hours office gathering, like the mandatory event in the story.
LaBelleBetterave I'm sorry for your loss, and for that horrific workplace experience. I'm being under a pick-and- choose manager who interprets company policy through her own lens, and differently from person to person. We that are not in her best graces have started screenshotting and journaling.
MM_in_MN Mandatory = wages and travel expenses paid. Employers cannot require you to attend an event if they are unwilling to pay for your time at the event.

Fabulous_Progress820 If they were requiring attendance, it legally should have been paid time. What they did was wage theft. I've never had a job require off the clock events, but I've definitely had jobs that try to tell me I'm supposed to study a training manual in my free time and not get paid for it. I still never studied off the clock.

Nevermind04 Stop phrasing time off as a "request". I know it's too late now, but in the future you should inform your employer about changes in your availability. What they do with that information is their problem. If you keep phrasing this as a "request" the answer will always be "no".

Green-Inkling Just say the bereavement was not a request. You're taking time off to grieve with or without their permission. They can fire you but it puts a target on their back for wrongful termination as bereavement is a protected reason for time off.

canthaveme They can't force you to be there without paying you
