Couple vacation in Germany, get surprised when restaurant server rejects them pressing 'no tip' at the cash register: 'She held it in front of me again'

The cultural expectation to tip has extended far beyond the United States.

It is difficult to bring up the topic of tips without things starting to get heated, but most would probably agree that so long as an employee gets paid a fair wage, a tip is something like a bonus and not a constant expectation.

The service industry in the United States operates in a pretty unique way in that the generosity of customers is supposed to supplement the subpar wage of servers, bar staff, and other types of jobs in the hospitality industry, a rule that just isn't followed by most other countries. However, that isn't to say that other parts of the world don't care about tips. On the contrary, there are plenty of places where it may not be necessary, but it is seen as polite. Workers want to be recognized for their efforts.

This can leave customers not knowing where they stand in terms of international tipping culture when they travel. Nobody enjoys being the awkward tourist, and more than that, not many people want to feel like they are being stingy because they didn't show the level of financial appreciation that their server expected.

  • Preston Robertson @prob22522 It's crazy to me that on my Europe trip on the outskirts of the city, tipping is definitely not expected or even offered. Inside the city they have those same stadium flip screens that say (at least more reasonably than American stadiums) 10-12-15% tip options.

    caroline @m1garandgirl tipping is definitely a thing in parts of europe now, mostly because they bought american checkout software and then just...didn't turn the tipping option off lol. I mean, it is a good way to milk more money from american tourists but I refuse to waste extra $$ money on them.

  • MetalByakko @MetalByakko Wait...IN GERMANY? Okay, they have every right to be ped. In germany tipping is a thing, but it's not a requirement. Personally I do tip, but that is for good service. Alone the whole thing with the wrong beer alone could be a reason. Sounds a shplace of a restaurant.

    Francis Roy @FrancisRoyCA Nothing has done more to deter me from eating or ordering out. Quite literally, I'll think "A prepared meal would be nice." Then I think of the social tension around the tips and I go to the grocery store.
