Tiny dachshund puppies come bouncing toward the camera in the sweetest little stampede: 'Can I have… all of them?'

Is there a better welcome than a puppy running toward you when you get home?

I would happily accept that reception every time I walked through my front door. Even if I'd only gone out to buy bread. Yes, I was gone for ten minutes, but these doggos greet you like they've been waiting for you all day. And if I had a thousand dachshunds, I would love the full reunion every time I get home. Being greeted with so much enthusiasm before you've even had a chance to put your things down makes you feel like someone is longing to see you, that your presence matters, and that you are special. Because you really are to your dog. And he literally has been waiting for you all day. Please pet him.

When I was little, I had a dog I named Cookie. I loved the way he would follow me around the house. I read a lot of books as a kid, and one of my favorite things was finding a sunny spot outside when the weather was nice and lying on the grass with whatever book I was reading at that moment. Cookie would come along and lie down beside me. So I was happy reading there with him next to me. It wasn't an activity that required dogs, but he joined me anyway, and having him there made the activity feel even nicer. I could get absorbed in what was happening on the page while he kept me company. Every now and then, my attention would come back to the little dog beside me, and I'd feel so pleased that he'd decided to stay. Reading was something I loved, and he made himself part of it by staying close.

That kind of company is so comforting. Doing something you love with someone keeping you company while you do it. I like the feeling of enjoying myself with someone beside me, each of us doing our own thing. With Cookie, I had my book, he had a place to stretch out, and we had a sunny afternoon together. Remembering it makes me want to lie on the grass with a book again.

That's the feeling I get when I see these tiny dachshund puppies bouncing toward the camera. I want their company. I want to sit down and let them reach me. And then we could do something together. I don't know your afternoon plans, buddy, but I'd rather spend my afternoon with you.
So I'm fond of both kinds of affection: the enthusiastic greeting and the quiet decision to settle next to me afterward. The puppies have made an entrance. Now I'd love to be there for whatever comes next. That's what good company is. Being there for the fun and for the quiet moments too. That's something I love about dogs. They don't mind what the plan is or if they will get to play with you this time; they just want to be there with you because they love you. The plan can be a game or an afternoon with a book. And they're happy to lie beside you while you do your own thing.
