How long should someone be expected to sacrifice their own comfort to accomodate a family member?
You know what they say: “family comes first.” But first, from what? And where does the line get drawn? I don't think family should be more important than myself, if you ask me… Well, of course it depends on the matter. When it comes to using my own home for my own things and having my boundaries and property respected, I don't think anyone is more entitled than me.
Now, in this entitled family story, a wife's husband told her that her brother was going to leave his very expensive motorcycle in their garage, since he had moved to a small apartment and doesn't have a garage. Fair enough. I mean, it's a little bit of an inconvenience, but hey, you're doing him a favor.
The problem is that the brother was very comfortable with that and decided to leave it there indefinitely. He came to the house to check on it but has no intention of picking it up and finding a garage of his own. This wouldn't have been a problem if it weren't for the coming winter… temperatures are dropping, and now the wife's car is frosting over at night, forcing her to run the defroster for minutes and making her late to work. Isn't that enough reason for this man to pick up his stuff?
The wife decided to share her story online because she's confused about whether she had done something wrong by moving the motorcycle to the garage. Since the weather was now an inconvenience, why does she have to sacrifice her own garage to store something that doesn't belong to them?
My husband’s brother moved to a smaller apartment back in August that doesn’t have a garage and he asked if he could keep his motorcycle at our place until he figured out somewhere else to put it, which my husband agreed to without even asking me. I said fine. I figured he’d come get it in a couple weeks.
It has been 3 months and the bike hasn’t moved ONCE. I’ve been parking in my own driveway the whole time. There’s a dust ring around the tires on my garage floor from how long it’s been sitting there.

Temperatures are dropping, frost forms at night, and now she needs to defrost the vehicle before driving to work, which makes her late. And nobody seems to care…
Wednesday morning there was frost all over my windshield for the first time this fall. I sat in the car running the defroster for almost 15 minutes before I could see well enough to back out. I was late to work over it.
I told my husband that night that I need the garage back now that it’s getting cold. He said the bike isn’t hurting anything and I should just keep parking in the driveway for a little while longer until his brother figures something out.
And now the revenge comes in… since nobody understood that the right to use the garage is hers, not her brother-in-law's, she took measurements herself and took the motorcycle out.
Saturday morning before my husband was up I rolled the motorcycle out onto the driveway on its kickstand and pulled my car in. I put his bike cover over it. My BIL showed up that afternoon because he swings by every couple weeks to check on it. He called my husband and told him his $12,000 bike is sitting outside where anyone could mess with it. My husband came to me and said I need to put it back right now. I told him it’s not hurting anything out there.
BIL came with a buddy’s truck Sunday morning and loaded it up without saying a word to me. He hasn’t responded to a d**n text since. He’s keeping it at his girlfriend’s place now apparently.
My husband says I went out of my way to embarrass his brother and that I should’ve just talked to him directly instead 🙄 I genuinely don’t think I did anything wrong. The bike sat in my garage for 3 months. Nobody asked me once how I was getting to work.

You’re my hero! 👏👏 NTA
Your husband is the AH here. If he wanted to store his brother’s bike then it should have been stored in his garage. Assuming you have a 2 car garage. I’m guessing it was fine to inconvenience you.

His problems aren’t your problems. Remind the twits how much he paid for free storage for months…

It only became a $12,000 bike once it had to sit outside for an afternoon.

You've got a husband problem. Why on earth should you have inconvenienced yourself for even a day when there was a perfectly good driveway for his brother's motorcycle? And three months - your brother-in-law was also taking advantage, which seemed to be okay with your husband because it wasn't inconveniencing *him*.

It's interesting to see just how fast BIL found a new storage place for his $12k bike. He just needed proper motivation.
OP did exactly the correct thing since dear, dear, supportive husband wasn't doing s**t to protect his own wife's car.
Husband and his brother are both TA.

Your BIL doesn't actually care about this bike. You can't just leave a vehicle unused for months and expect it to still be working when you get back to it. Batteries start to lose their charge. Tires get flat. Liquids deposit and gunk up or corrode components.

Now, if you ask me, I don't think she did anything wrong. Honestly, the other way around. The wife is really using the garage that belongs to her, and she doesn't have to be late for work or get up earlier because her husband decided to help his brother. Besides, they have already stored the bike for more than three months, and he didn't seem to be looking for a safe place to keep it. What would have happened if she hadn't moved it? Would it have been there forever? We don't know, but it looks like he wasn't doing much to fix that situation. Sharing the story online gave this wife strength and confirmed that her actions weren't at fault.
