Assumed as an "aggressive" breed, Rottweilers are just misunderstood. They're really sweeties and the intimidating noises they make don't usually mean what you think.
There's no official reason for Rottweilers to be assumed as an “aggressive” breed other than they're usually big and strong dogs. They were actually bred to help on the farm driving cattle and pulling carts. They were some of the first dogs to be used as police K-9s, so maybe that helped contribute to their scary stereotypes. And, unfortunately, they are commonly used in illegal dog fighting rings due to their size and stregnth, which is simply just heartbreaking since they are actually such sweet creatures. But what really seems to be the main driving force for the fear of Rottweilers are all the scary noises they constantly make.
Usually, growling coming from a dog is not a good sign. It could mean an array of things, but usually something on the negative side—like they're feeling threatened or frightened and are warning you to back off or else. However, when it comes to Rottweilers, this is not always the case.
TikToker Abby Marie, aka @ams620, posted a video of her cuddling with her Rottweiler. As she backs away from the large dog laying on her back against her, she starts growling. The dog moves towards Marie, and uses her paws to gently put her mom's arm back around her. All while she is growling and showing her teeth.
Though many viewers think it's cute, many are also commenting how scary that situation is to them. Being that close, especially with your face right next to their face, while a large dog is growling seems terrifying. However, rottie fans are quick to the comment section to clear up that Rottweilers are actually some of the only dog breeds that growl when they are feeling excited—TikTokers are saying it's called the “rottie rumble.”
If you dive deep into Rottweiler TikTok you will actually find many instances of these large breeds sounding scary but actually being very sweet. Yes, they will also make a growling noise when they are not feeling safe, so it's important to be able to decipher the differences. Rottie owners on TikTok, however, make it very clear that once you become a Rottweiler parent, the difference between an excited/ affectionate growl and an unhappy growl are very distinctive.
These types of videos are creating a larger conversation around the “rottie rumble," helping educate those who misunderstand the breed and even helping some who have feared them become less afraid of these creatures. “I was attacked by two Rottweilers, so I’m really afraid of them,” one commenter said. “This just came up on my FYP. This was really nice to see.❤️"
It's important to always do your research on a specific breed that you are welcoming into your life. Rottweilers and many other large and in charge breeds tend to get misunderstood often. It's important to train any dog you have, especially one that is stronger than you. But, as many dog lovers and professional dog trainers/vets have said, it's the owner, not the breed, that makes a dog aggressive.
