It feels as though every day Dolly Parton wakes up and makes the world a better place by simply existing. The famed country star is known for her kindness, generosity, and, of course her great pipes. In recent years, she's funded important Covid-19 research, and since starting the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 she's raised and given out tons of money to make education more accessible to those who need it most - a true hero. Her goodness extends beyond philanthropy, and she proved this yet again when she declined her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination earlier today.
In a note posted across the star's social media accounts, Parton explains that while she is flattered by the nod, she doesn't feel she's earned the right - and doesn't want the votes for the other nominees to be split on her accord. The other nominees include Eminem, the New York Dolls (why are they just getting nominated now?), Carly Simon, Dionne Warwick, Rage Against the Machine, MC5, Kate Bush, and others. It's a stacked bill, and clearly Dolly respects it.
Despite bowing out of the running this year, Dolly does express the hope of being nominated another time - maybe after she's worked on the rock and roll album the occasion has inspired her to put out. If the Hall of Fame (who has not responded to Dolly's regrets) knows what's good for them, they'll make do on that hope in a future year. While we doubt anyone is surprised by Dolly's admirable behavior, people (and brands) are still taking to social media to praise the country legend's queenly behavior.
While most people opted to give Parton a virtual pat on the back, others disagreed with the move - arguing that Parton deserves it.
She may not be gracing the stage in Cleveland this year, but it's clear she has a pretty permanent place in our hearts.
