Personal Assistant Ad For Stanford Student Sparks Mockery & Debate

Sometimes I think my life would be better if I had a personal assistant. You know, someone to take care of all of my dumb chores and the bureaucratic bullshit of day-to-day life. But then I remember that I'm making a paltry wage that can barely pay for living in New York, and I start doing my laundry instead of giving into delusions of grandeur. The crazy thing is, though, that there are people who are just over half my age who aren't working, and have the means to pay someone well over my hourly wage to do their grunt work. It's a sobering truth, and one that was alerted to me last week when Twitter user @TheodorAwhoreno shared a classified ad posted by a Stanford grad who is seeking a personal assistant. The rate? A whopping $45 an hour.

The tweet quickly went viral, and other Twitter users were chomping at the bit to give their opinion on the advertisement. While some kind people defended the ad, positing that perhaps the student was disabled, OP quickly snuffed out those concerns with another excerpt from the advertisement.

While some people scoffed at the idea of hiring a personal assistant while in college, others defended the move, explaining that they would have loved that kind of support while they were pursuing an education. There is something to be said about using ones privilege to set oneself up for success.

Does the hatred and outcry come from a place of jealousy? It's possible. Lord knows I'd love to be able to hire someone at this rate for these purposes.

For all the hating, it sure does seem like a lot of people are interested in the gig. Here's hoping she found a decent candidate - and doesn't check Twitter.
