If you're after a relaxing Caribbean holiday but don't want to be surrounded by hoards of people, try one of the lesser known islands in the Caribbean, such as Bonaire. Bonaire is an island municipality of the Netherlands located just off the coast of Venezuela. Bonaire is most famous for its scuba diving and snorkeling, and that means that the island is full of beautiful beaches and warm water. If you'd rather go to a quiet beach than a busy one, make your way to 1000 Steps Beach.
1000 Steps Beach is located on the western coast of Bonaire. And if its name is daunting, there aren't actually 1000 steps down to the beach - there are 67. It's best to access 1000 Steps Beach with a car, because there is no public transport in the area. When driving, put the 1000 Steps Beach location into your GPS. There are signs for the staircase, so you won't miss it. Once you park your car, make your way down the limestone staircase. From here you'll get a view of the impossibly turquoise water and by the time you've reached the bottom, you'll be more than ready for a swim.
Many people have called 1000 Steps Beach one of the best spots for snorkeling and diving in Bonaire, so don't forget your equipment! But if you do forget it, don't worry. Most visitors are greeted by the local turtles that live in the water, and it'll be hard to miss the other marine creatures swimming by in the crystal clear water. 1000 Steps Beach isn't exactly the best place to sunbathe, as some visitors have found the ground too rocky (so bring a chair if you plan on staying for a while). Otherwise, walk along the beach, spot as much sea life as possible, and enjoy swimming in the beautiful water.
