  • What you will need

Tie dyeing is easy to do at home, and you'll only need a few materials. They are the following:

    • a tie dyeing kit or tie dyeing colors in squeeze bottles
    • rubber bands
    • rubber gloves
    • zip-lock bag
    • a bucket
    • something white you want to tie dye (a t-shirt is perfect)

First, wet your white item you want to dye (for the purposes of this article I'll call it a t-shirt). Ring it out so the t-shirt is damp but not dripping wet.

  • Step 2 (optional)

If you want to test the dyes before using them, you can use a spare piece of material to see how they turn out. Or if you're adventurous, skip this step and go to Step 3.

  • Step 3

Lay the t-shirt on a flat surface and start making a spiral shape from the center of the t-shirt.

Continue twisting the t-shirt around until it forms a roughly circular shape.

  • Step 5

Take 3 or 4 rubber bands and stretch them over the t-shirt, intersecting in the middle like a cake. This will hold the t-shirt together.

  • Step 6

Put on your rubber gloves, and start squirting the dye onto the t-shirt. You can squirt one color per wedge section, or just freestyle it. It's up to you.

Turn the t-shirt over and color the other side.

  • Step 8

Once you have finished coloring the t-shirt, place it inside a plastic bag or zip-lock bag and leave it overnight, for around 8 hours.

  • Step 9

After leaving the t-shirt overnight, take it outside of the ziplock bag. The colors will have had time to soak into the t-shirt.

Rinse the t-shirt in cool water until the dye stops running. Ring out the t-shirt and let it dry naturally.
