Have you ever been lucky enough to visit Africa's largest bird sanctuary? Nestled in Cape Town South Africa, the World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary and Monkey Park houses over 3,000 different bird species, and they're pretty incredible! According to the Sanctuary's website, "The Sanctuary also serves as hospital, orphanage and breeding centre, caring for injured birds and animals, and breeding of many bird and animal species behind-the-scenes."
If you enjoy this sort of content, we cover similar stories every Thursday, such as a wildlife-filled remote Scottish Island, an incredible bear sanctuary in Romania, and a national park in Argentina full of giant otters and capybaras! We've even visited some other pretty cool places in this segment, from a real life cat village in Taiwan to the Japanese rabbit island of Okunoshima. So stay tuned to hear next week's destination!
This incredible bird pictured here is called a Threskiornithidae, or a scarlet Ibis. According to Wikipedia, "Members of the family have long, broad wings with 11 primary feathers and about 20 secondaries. They are strong fliers and, rather surprisingly, given their size and weight, very capable soarers. The body tends to be elongated, the neck more so, with rather long legs."
"Ever seen a baby ostrich (read: Rhea)? Ever seen a baby ostrich moments after it hatched? While in South Africa? No? Well, now you have. Poor dude held this pose just long enough to grab this shot before going face first back into the dirt. Thanks, pal, and good luck on the whole living thing." (source)
