This Reddit tale is a hot bed for differing opinions. Everyone has an opinion on moving etiquette. OP needed help moving apartments and asked a few friends for help. He said the whole ordeal only took a couple of hours. Because of this, he feels justified in not offering them anything in return as a thank you. He 'assumed they were okay with this being a free gig.' Never assume anything buddy. It only makes an ass out of u and me. After the moving was done, they all went to a restaurant 'starving' from the work. When the bill came, the movers thanked OP for getting the bill. He was shocked by this assumption. This is all just a case of bad communication on everyone's end. No one should ever assume anything. Were the friends right in thinking they would be compensated in this way? It is pretty standard to at least provide pizza for your pals. Help the moral judges to decide who really is at fault here.
Immediately my reaction is, yes. Last time I helped a friend move he bought us a pizza. If he had mentioned that it was a financial hardship for him we wouldn't have expected it. The problem with OP is, he made assumptions and didn't communicate anything to his pals. Keep reading for the details.
