A husband has shut down his wife's wishes for naming their fifth child, and the internet has voiced its support in her direction as he has given her zero input in naming the first four.
Going by the online handle u/AITAWitchername, the husband posted to r/AmItheAsshole seeking advice after a dispute between him and his wife. The husband vehemently disapproves of his wife's choice of baby names, including naming the child after two characters from the fantasy series 'The Witcher.'
'The Witcher' has been gaining popularity since the release of CD Projekt RED's video game series, based on the original books written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. 'The Witcher 3', the developer's latest game, was a smash-hit globally and launched the series' protagonist Geralt onto the list of 'most popular fantasy swordsmen.' The parallel protagonist of the book series Cirilla and deuteragonist Yennefer also became increasingly popular with 'The Witcher 3' release.
As Netflix's adaptation of the series brings it more and more into the focus of the mainstream audiences, you will inevitably see these characters referenced more and more in popular culture. It's a shame, then, that the adapted characters fail to retain the source characters' core personality traits and motivations. I don't understand why showrunners think they can make a name for themselves by butchering existing series. Just create your own intellectual property and do whatever the hell you like to it. All you're doing with your current approach is leveraging existing fans' emotions to find success for your own shitty story. This is a hill I will die on, but, for now, it's a conversation for another day.
The point is that Cirilla and Yennefer are two of the names that u/AITAWitchername's wife has in mind. Despite our recent takes on naming children after fictional characters, we can't help but feel that the wife should have complete control over naming this child due to her husband's controlling behavior.
