The hardware store always felt like magical place when I was growing up. While my dad walked around buying whatever home improvement and hardware essentials the house needed, I could roam the sawdust-scented aisles in blissful ignorance. The shining toilets fascinated me, as did the massive refrigerators with two doors and, get this, an ice maker. Fancy appliances like that offered a window into a life that never felt possible for me. Spoiler alert: I still don't have this coveted type of fridge.
The paint section was another favorite zone. The swatches of colors tantalized my young eyes, and the mock ups of beautiful, colorful rooms felt a little bit like traveling. I'd fold them up and shove them in my pocket for some purpose that would never materialize. For many people, hardware stores like Home Depot are a little more serious and a lot less fun. They represent stress, money going down the drain, and sometimes lost dreams. Or you know, an average day of work for a Home Depot employee - which is probably not deserving of a "fun" categorization.
