Taking time off, no matter what your job entails, is absolutely crucial for mental health and general wellbeing. But some employers either don't agree with that, or simply don't care. Such is the case of Redditor u/Nannyneedabreak, whose username kind of says it all. By her account, the twenty-two year old woman has been nannying two amazing kids, aged six and eight. And she's never taken any time off. Seven months ago, she decided to request time off for her sister's wedding this coming weekend - a once in a lifetime (well, hopefully) opportunity. Initially, when OP asked for the time off, her boss responded agreeably. But just days before the wedding, the nanny received a text from her boss saying she really needed her that weekend.
Though OP calmly apologized to her boss, explaining that she would not be able to work, she received a scathing response - and was told she'd be fired if she didn't show up to care for the children.
OP again responded calmly, accepting the punishment from her toxic boss - even offering to help find someone to cover for her. Unfortunately, according to the nanny, “She threw a few insults at me and said I’m abandoning her kids. Idk what to do, I don’t want to get a new job because I work so well with these two kiddos.”
While we think that the response was perfect, OP's mom did not agree. She even said that OP should have missed the wedding. Which, to us, is pretty damn surprising.
Therein lies the reason u/Nannyneedabreak came to the r/AITA subreddit. When her mom called her an “asshole” for accepting that she might get fired, it seems she began having doubts about her response.
The community has since deemed our hero as “NTA,” and members rallied around her, encouraging her to seek new employment. Bosses like these are a great reminder that sometimes, work isn't worth it. It's better to be unemployed than treated like a slave.
