Call me a sappy, bleeding heart vegetarian, but I've long believed that most animals have some kind of personality. Just because they can't be fully functioning members of society doesn't mean that they can't have feelings and form bonds with other animals and people.
Of course, this isn't an uncommon sentiment — almost any pet owner will insist that their chosen animal has some kind of connection with them, even if they have a lingering suspicion that they're just in it for the food. However, these relationships can also be developed with some of the critters that live in the wild.
This has been sweetly demonstrated by a thread started by @ingram_wallace, where she shared with the world how the birds she had been putting out peanuts for had responded by giving her some gifts of their own. People were keen to add their own stories of species such as crows responding to them in similar ways, and they didn't disappoint. If only all interactions between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom were as wholesome.
