As people who love cats an almost unhealthy amount, we can understand the thought of someone abandoning their cats. We don't get it. We know that, in some situations, a cat doesn't fit with its new owner, we do get that, but that doesn't mean they should be abandoned. You can find them a different place instead. That's why stories like the one about a person that just left their cat behind when they moved (thankfully, the cat got rescued), or the one about the cat whose owners abandoned it and left it on the streets (don't worry, also got rescued), and even the one when a bomb squad was called to disable a bag that ended up being full of abandoned kittens (who were also rescued) shock us.
Don't abandon your cats. And do what this neighbor woman did either. It is not a solution to dump a closed crate full of kittens on your neighbor's porch. The poor babies wouldn't have stood a chance if this woman hadn't found them in time. Thankfully, this is another story with a happy ending - and a lesson.
"So last Monday morning I took out a bag of trash and found someone had left a crate full of 5 kittens on my patio."
"They had also left some food(wet and dry) a bed, and some toys. Asking around with my neighbors I learned that a woman had been seen dumping the kittens Sunday evening meaning the kittens had been trapped in that crate for at least 12 hours with no food or water."
"So far I have been unable to find a shelter/rescue willing to take them because they were either trapped from a feral colony or were very poorly socialized to people and aren't friendly or adoptable."
"One shelter suggested I foster them for a week and see if they warm up and have potential to be rehabilitated into house cats. So for right now that's what I'm doing with a back up plan of getting them spayed/neutered and see if we can incorporate them into out local feral colony."
"I can't begin to describe how furious I am at this woman for dumping these kittens on me. Plus because I had no idea they were out there and it was only chance that I had trash to take out these kittens could have died trapped in that carrier and the Houston heat."
"Now I have a work order to fix the lock on my gate and will be ordering a sign telling people 'Don't dump animals on my patio'"
"I will say that these kittens are slowly warming up and will play with a feather wand, and I got the grey tortie to take a treat from my hand."
"They still have a long way to go as they are still easily spooked and don't want to petted(yet but still hoping that will change)"
"I did set up an Amazon wishlist for them as I don't really have the resources to take care of these kittens long term in case anyone wants to help me. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3BOI7N37BKYFD?ref_=wl_share"
"Little Miss Trouble. Currently she's progressing the fastest into an adoptable cat. Right now she's gone from accepting pets to demanding them and getting very vocal if I'm petting one of the other kittens"
"The sink is a very popular sleeping spot"
"Seems like there's more kittens in the sink every time I go in."
"Turmoil accepting a few ear scritches. I think another week or so and these babies will be sweet enough to be adoptable"
"Still working on taming kittens dumped on my patio"
"These three (Trenta, Grande, and Turmoil) are doing very well. They love to play, eat treats, and enjoy pets when they are sleepy"
"Cuddle pile. Right after this Trenta actually got up and headbutted my hand to ask for pets."
"Grande and Turmoil."
"Trenta. There's one more black kitten Venti who is a bit more skittish and shy. Hoping to win him over next week. Trouble has been surrendered to CAP (a no kill shelter) has been spayed and is up for adoption"
