You can definitely be friends with your boss, but when he starts asking for free labor, that's where this employee had to draw the line.

As she tells it, she was at this job for a decade before leaving — she had to depart since her boss denied her a raise. But she stayed in contact with her boss, and he even told her she'd be welcomed back to the job anytime she needed. The OP took that seriously, but her boss didn't.
Bosses usually want more work for less — they want things done in less time, with fewer resources, and paying as little as possible. However, you'd think most bosses would understand that if you don't pay your employee, they aren't just going to do work out of the kindness of their heart.
While we're on the topic of bosses, this guy's boss wanted updates all the time — so this person sent 119 emails in a single day, giving updates every few minutes.
