Amphibi-awesome Dude Discovers 1000's of Endangered Salamanders Living in the Lining of His Pond, Acts Like a Bro and Let's Them Stay

People make critter discoveries in their backyard all the time. Sometimes you'll see a friendly raccoon on your fence or some silly earth worms popping out of the corners of your lawn, but how often can you say that you found a generation-saving volume of endangered worm-lizards in your backyard? Didn't think so.

One man in North Carolina, a hobby yardsman, has recently earned his animal activism card when he discovered an entire salamander colony living in the lining of his built in pool. This is Adam, a local guy who just learned a whole lot about his amphibious neighbors in the last couple of weeks after he found thousands of little water lizards living in his pond.

While replacing the water in his pond, Adam noticed a salamander scurrying into the folds of the lining between the water and the earth. When he followed the ‘mander’s path, he peeled away the lining layer to find thousands of guys piled together in the wet, dark folds of his man-made pond. According to experts in the comments, some of these appear to be an endangered species of salamander that has been protected and in-recovery for decades.

What's extremely cool is that Adam has decided to cultivate his little colony of wigglers and has refilled his pond to become a fully time sanctuary for the salamanders! Apparently, salamanders are like salmon, where they remember the pond that they were spawned in and return to it to nest once again. At some point, Adam's yard must have been a breeding ground for them, because they're already reproducing at an alarming rate, producing bucketfuls of eggs!

Adam has fully embraced the life of his amphibious buddies and is now an official salaman-dude. He's adding to the pond to become more habitable for the salamanders and is happily preparing the way for the next generation of slime buddies to come through. Having learned so much about these animals, it's unlikely that Adam is going to stop there. We expect to see some really cool spring-style environments, proving that hoomans are sometimes bros to nature. So those are the salaman-dos and the salaman-don'ts of the natural world.

  1. Help the buddies
  2. Be cool and let them do their thing
  3. Watch neat stuff happen
