Recently, I haven't been able to stop thinking about the fact that the YA romance novel Red White, And Royal Blue (which was recently adapted into a movie for Amazon Prime) was based on a real-person fanfiction about Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield. It's a thought that never leaves my mind, much like the fact that 50 Shades of Grey was based on Twilight fanfiction never got past me ten years ago. There's a term for this practice called "Filing off the serial numbers," which is when you take a piece of fanfiction and remove any of the details that could connect it to an existing work. Honestly, I don't think there's anything ethically wrong with that. The only problem is that we get a bunch of published books that feel like Wattpad dot com. But hey, I'm not here to judge. If you love fanfiction, repurposed fanfiction, romance novels, classics, graphic novels, or none of the above, these reading memes are perfect for the literate.
