Last week, we took a gander at international covers of the first Harry Potter book. This week, we move on to the often-overlooked, yet beloved, sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It is fascinating to see which scene and which motifs from the book each artist chose to feature on their book cover. Phoenixes, Ford Anglias, spiders, swords, and brooms are featured often and prominently in many of the images below. Strangely, large snakes feature on quite a number of these covers, despite being a massive spoiler for the mystery at the heart of the plot. Depictions of Salazar Slytherin's chamber vary, with some resembling a creepy stone crypt and others seeming almost psychedelic with their strange and imaginative architecture. It is also interesting to see which illustrators were influenced by the movie franchise, which ones were too early to be affected by it, and which ones made an active effort not to resemble the established aesthetic of the films despite having drawn the covers well after their release. Which book do you think Madame Pince would choose to keep in her library?
