Background: About 15yrs ago I was working as a very fancy gardener in Massachusetts. We tended to the House of Seven Gables, and other wicked fancy places. One such location was the home of an extremely rich (I mean top richest people in the country, this is a huge investment management company.) The house was

known for filming parts of a perfect movie about a particular storm. I'm talking maybe abound of wealth. For example, on job I was given was to rake the rocks on one of their personal beaches, to make it more even. Yes, seriously. No, it never made a difference, I'm not as strong as the ocean.

The daughter of the owner was planning on being married on this property. It was months of preparation, from moving in a garden to cover parking lots, to plantings moss between me paving stones, and even us painting planters for, unloading, and planting dozens of Douglas fir trees. I mean, you guys, when I say over the top, this place had staging set up, yurts, I

mean, it was insane. So. The Malicious Compliance: The boss had this weird thing he did. Each morning, we'd get a call telling us where our first job was to be. We give the okay, and head over there. Everyone lived in different cities, and it usually took 20+minutes to arrive anywhere after the call.

Can you guess where this is going yet? The week of the wedding, the boss is slipping. Not as cordial as usual. Ok. He's stressed. The day before the wedding, we bust . I tell my boss I have another gig with my second job the next day, and he gets saying I can't leave this one tomorrow until it's done. Ok. When's it gonna finish?
  • 08
He didn't know. Ok. I prepare myself for the inevitable stress I'll go through the next day, with almost no sleep, and a cool 18+hr work day ahead of me. I'm young, no problem, I can do that. The next day, I wake up and wait for the phone to ring. It does, but a good half hour later than usual It's the boss, screaming about

where am I. I tell him I'm here, waiting for the usual call. He yells and says I need to show up, at the wedding site..." in the next 15 minutes, or you're fired!". Guess who went right back to bed since the wedding site was over 25 minutes away?

Can you also guess who didn't answer the numerous desperate calls from said employer? Begging pleas feel on my deaf, contentedly sleeping ears as the phone rang all day.

I'm sure the wedding went well otherwise. I'm not even sure what part we were supposed to play that day. And I'm SO HAPPY I NEVER FOUND OUT.
  • 12
GovernorSan Honestly, I'm confused as to why you had to wait til the morning of to find out where you were working that day. Seems to me that the owner could have figured that out sometime that afternoon/evening and informed everyone the night before or even

before you leave that day. He doesn't sound like the most organized boss. ✩ 190 Reply B Indogs OP I agree with you whole heatedly. He often made extremely poor business choices.

He is no longer in business.

"Ah well, don't feel like risking my life and license by traveling double the speed limit to avoid getting fired, guess I'll just go back to sleep."

dajur1 What was a gardner supposed to play at a wedding? 18 ☐ Reply B ndogs OP Still have no idea.
  • 18
Legidragon I'm not sure if this counts as malicious compliance, you could have easily just preemptively been on your way or nearby the wedding site since you're admitting you knew the next day was going to be a disaster... I feel like this is just you getting fired and being okay with it..?

Unless I'm misreading something 17 Reply Sh Bitchndogs OP. 3 yr. ago Preemptively going to the site he didn't tell me to go to? I'm not the boss, I honestly had NO IDEA what's in store

for me any day. I'm not going to assume differently without a head up. No I didn't know the next day would be a disaster for them, just for me. Working over 30 hours in 2 days.

B Indogs OP. For the record though, I WAS totally cool with being fired. Especially if it just took me doing exactly what the boss wanted. He wasn't a joy to work for. But that's beside the point.
