Ever since it first arrived on our screens, Mad Men has been renowned for its attention to detail. Every set and costume was painstakingly thought out to the extent that every desk in the Sterling Cooper office had a fully filled Rolodex, and characters wore outfits that reflected the actual weather patterns of the year they were living in. It represented a meticulousness that naysayers may claim is at odds with slop-overrun, ensh*ttified social media platforms that so many of us begrudgingly spend a lot of their time on. In reality, though, it is exactly what many enjoy the most.

After all, no form of social media would exist if there was nothing to talk about, and all of the shows of the so-called ‘prestige TV’ era exist precisely for that reason. If there is one thing that the majority of chronically online individuals like to do, it is generate discourse on anything and everything. While these topics often lean more stupid, anything that boasts more depth than the main character of the week is an obvious temptation.

The more layers that a piece of media has, the more potential there is for it to generate content. As a show that some fans have likened to being a TV version of the Great American Novel, Mad Men is the perfect candidate for this. Even the silliest of talking points and memes need a solid starting point if they are going to have any longevity, and this is exactly what Twitter users have rediscovered with this rewatch.
