  • "Forced to switch seats to accommodate a dog"

Flew from Detroit to San Francisco last night. Full flight. I was in the window seat, which I specifically booked. This guy who was originally sitting in the aisle seat on the other side of the aisle from me gets up and moves to the aisle next to me. He sets. down a piece of luggage. at his feet that clearly
  • won't fit under the seat. I told him I didn't think they were going to let him fly like that, and he said it was his dog. Then he tells me the reason he switched to the aisle seat next to me was because the guy in the window seat next to him also had a dog. I left it alone.
  • Then we start taxiing, and the flight attendant noticed this situation before we take off. So she and another flight attendant come up and tell me I have to take his aisle seat and give up my window because he can't block the way out.
  • So, yeah, I had to give up my window seat so this guy who clearly didn't plan ahead could accommodate his dog. I didn't complain much but certainly seemed wrong to me. Meanwhile the guy with the dog never said a word to me about it.

  • RedHolly I would contact delta and ask for any charge you had for a seat refunded. Other than that not much else you can do. I'm surprised they let him fly with a dog crate that wouldn't fit under the seat.
  • FullAbbreviations605 OP Well the other dog guy flew the same way! I guess they let that happen if you're in the window seat. I'm definitely going to contact them. I just couldn't believe the whole situation.
  • Outrageous-Ad577 You should be mad at delta. They shouldn't allow people with dogs in aisle seats if the aisle seats on the plane doesn't have space underneath
  • YaBeBest Yea definitely more this. The airline should know ahead of time if the underseat space would fit a proper sized kennel. Now, if they are bringing a kennel bigger than allowed...def on the owner.
  • Amazonchitlin I really think things need to change with "service animals." Right now it's just far too easy to ab e the sh out of the system. You can tell pretty quickly what is an actual service dog and what isn't. Let the fakers be called out and fined.

  • Humblefreindly You're a better person than I am. I specifically book window seats because they help mitigate motion sickness. Dramamine helps, but not 100%. I wonder what would have happened if you said that you were allergic to dogs? Would they have booted you off the plane? Sympathies.
  • flowerqu Yeah, this prioritizing of dogs/dog owners has gotten completely out of hand. Complex-Anxiety-7976 If it was a service dog you'd be offered a seat far away and if that didn't suit you the second offer is a different airplane.
  • lettingtimepass On a flight right now, and the woman behind a pet owner stated she is allergic to dogs. Owner asked, "You didn't let them know before?" She responds, "I didn't know I had to." Just a sad state of affairs and no one is doing anything to address the problem. Dog is currently barking and the owner keeps getting loud to call it down. I just wanna sleep Imao.
  • NachoBros So over it. And I have owned and loved multiple dogs in my lifetime. It's not just the friendly skies either...poodles and poms in my local supermarkets, getting approached by an offleash Rottweiler (friendly but while at the playground with my kid, etc...
  • SilverEnvironment392 Totally agree. I would have showed the FA my ticket and stayed there. The fact that the guy is flying with a dog and obviously knew in advance that was his problem.

  • SetSilly 5744 I'm so sick of it lol. And everyone who gets the short end of the stick just takes it. OP should've let the flight attendant and the dog owner figure it out. Your poor preparation will not inconvenience me. Especially if this is something I specifically paid for. Im pretty calm and polite in escalated situations (get more flies with honey than sh) but PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN.
  • Nire_Txahurra I love, love, love dogs. We currently have 3 dogs. Having said all that, I 100% agree with you. Totally out of control.
  • Lumpy-Suit573 Just an FYI - there is at least a $100 charge each way to bring the dog in a carrier, plus any additional seat choosing charges you would incur as a human. There are rules about the size of the carrier bag too...possibly the carrier bag and/or the dog was too large? Sorry you fell victim to someone elses entitlement - because there is no way they were not made aware of the rules.
  • mbarker42 You should be mad at Delta, not the passenger. Unfortunately I went through almost this exact thing last September but as the dog owner. I recently got a job in Washington and had to move from Detroit which meant shipping my life across the country. I did not want to take my dog on the 5.5 hour flight, but it was that or pay $2500 to have a stranger drive her across the country.

  • Deltas website has all the kennel requirements listed and you must call the customer service line to book a ticket with an accompanying pet. It's an additional $100 fee and they are very upfront and descriptive with all of the requirements for flying with a pet. Only a certain amount of animals are allowed on the plane and I was not able to change my seat assignment after booking due to having my dog with me. Delta keeps track of where all the animals are on the plane. (I'm shocked they had two
  • Prior to my flight, I verified my carrier fit the size limits and specifications and even upgraded to first class for extra space just in case. When I got to DTW and checked in the attendant double checked the size of the carrier and cleared me and my dog to fly. Here's where it got messy. I get on the plane and get to my seat and when I look down, the underside of the seat is incredibly short and my foot space had the infotainment control box in it.
  • There was no way my dog was going to fit, my backpack was barely fitting. I was panicked. I ended up putting the carrier under my legs and up against the wall and as close to under the seat as I could. The FA was super nice about it and apologized about the small space, mentioning something about a plane change. Luckily the guy next to me was a big time dog lover and really nice the whole flight.
  • Moral of the story: you can be as prepared as possible, double check and plan everything, but you over. You never know why Delta can still f people are traveling with pets. Sometimes it might be their only choice.
