Got Written Up After a Party of 6 Walked Out on a $300 Bill.

They came in, ordered a bunch of food and drinks, and everything seemed totally normal. No complaints and no signs of an issue. Then, when it was time to pay, they all started casually leaving one by one until the table was empty. By the time I realized what was happening, they were long gone.

I told my manager, and they were obviously pl ed... and then I got written up for it. Apparently, I should have been "more attentive" and noticed sooner. But what was I supposed to do? Hover over them the whole time? It's not like I can physically stop people from leaving.

Commenters were quick to come to the server's defense.

_iron_butterfly_ • 5d ago I will never be able to wrap my head around why a server is responsible for people who dine and dash. Grocery workers aren't responsible for shoplifters... they're not allowed to touch them, or they will get fired (where I live). Do these restaurants expect you to

lineback tackle them, drag back in, take their wallet, and make them pay? I'm so sorry this happened to you... this is the stupidest policy, and it's appauling so many restaurants do this to their employees.

Pobo13 5d ago . Contact their boss and say that it's the Managers job to make sure police are called on people who don't pay. That's part of being management. They need to do their jobs. If you had tried to stop anyone from leaving they could have gotten violent and that's why it's the Managers job.

CoffeePotProphet . 5d ago Yeah no. You aren't in charge of theft from customers

Mullinore 5d ago • Dude. You should have had your restaurant issued taser ready.

I once had to cancel a dish on my shift and asked my manager how to do it as I was new. I did as he said and canceled the whole table by accident (around 200€ because

one guy wanted to cancel the sauce he ordered). I reorderd the table without the sauce but all my boss saw was a cancelation of 200€ even though it actually was 3,5€. What did he do? He asked me if they ran. There was no threat of me getting written up or having to pay for it. He was obviously

chill after I told him that there was just a mistake in canceling and no serious money lost. But stuff like that is just normal in this industry and is to be expected.

strolpol 5d ago Dine and dash isn't on you. It's bulls because your boss is embarrassed he f ed up.
  • 16
SwankySteel . 5d ago Your manager is doing damage control at your expense - they're trying to create a "not my fault" narrative.

Apart-Alternative-42 5d ago I've never signed a write up in my entire life. You do not have to sign sh. Never let anyone bu y you into that bs.

keepcalmdude • 5d ago Your manager is an a that's on them. Where I work I have a 100% discount button we use for those instances (which are exceedingly rare) where I work. It's part of the cost of doing business, and there's many ways to reduce that cost. Putting the responsibility solely on you isn't one of those ways.
  • 19
That said, if we have a lot of walkouts connected to one server, then that's a pattern that is a problem.
  • 20
Putrid_Ad_2256 . 5d ago Tell the manager that you'd like a salary of at least $50K a year on top of what you currently make waiting tables because he now requires you to be a loss prevention associate.

neo_neanderthal • 5d ago Even if they had stood up, laughed, and said "Gotcha, sucker! We're leaving and not paying a nickel!", what are you supposed to do? You're not a cop, you're not even allowed to physically restrain them, let alone how bad of an idea that would be.
  • 22
The only thing you or your manager can do is call the police. It is not the job of employees to physically restrain thieves, even if they know the theft is happening.
  • 23
When I used to work in retail, I was actually explicitly instructed not to do anything but call the police if I saw someone shoplifting, because it was a liability nightmare for them if employees tried to stop or confront them and it went wrong.

Lyqwi... • 5d ago Edited 5d ago I was a waiter at a very busy TGI Fridays in the 90s and have a lot of stories of dine and dash. There are people that are practically professional about it. I remember one guy was "waiting for friend" made a big

deal about letting me know that, had a couple drinks and appetizers, middle of the day, very chatty and friendly. Said he was heading to the restroom, keep an eye out for his friend... never saw him again.
  • 26
I don't think they can hold you responsible unless there is some kind of pattern, you can't watch every table constantly.

Another story that is a favorite.... Four boys around 17-18 yrs old were in on a Friday night. They took off running but we got the license plate and called the police. About an hour later, one of the kids is back with his dad standing behind him.... like an executive sort of guy, looked like he was going to Explode!
