Being able to call them when you have a problem, or rely on them when times are bad is a crucial element of having a healthy upbringing. If you feel like you can't call a parent or sibling in a jam, there's a problem. In those types of situations it may be better to bond with close friends to rely on, because at the end of the day we all need someone. Though dependency is important between family members, there's always a line. There's boundary between normal, consensual dependence, and being cajoled into something, manipulated, or taken advantage of in any way. It all depends on you and what your standards are, and where your boundaries lie.

In the story below, the protagonist is a single dad who's been babysitting on and off for his sister with multiple young children. He doesn't mind at first, and family helps family. But push comes to shove, and he can't always make their last minute demands. This causes a pugnacious row between siblings about parenting, leaving them both hurt.

This woman is being cruel and unreasonable. You can't compare being a single parent with a late wife and one daughter to being a parent for multiple children who shares the responsibility with a husband. They're simply not comparable, and it's plain mean to insinuate she's busier than him. It's not a contest.
