  • "My team threw me a surprise birthday party and they had no idea what it meant to me."

So, I'm the boss of a small unisex salon. Nothing fancy, just a cozy little space where we laugh, hustle, and occasionally argue over whose turn it is to refill the water kettle.

  • Yesterday, my colleagues surprised me with a birthday party. Balloons, a cake with too many candles (thanks for that), and even a handmade card signed by everyone.

  • They said I'd been "so good to them" and just wanted to "give back the way I give to them." I smiled. I laughed. I even pretended to be cool about it all.

  • But what they don't know that it's the only birthday celebration I've had since I was 7, if my memory serves right. I'm not big on celebrations. I never made a fuss about birthdays. Over the years, it just became another day for me. Until yesterday.

  • These people I pay to work with me... turned around and gave me something that felt personal. Real. Unexpectedly warm. It wasn't about the cake. Or the decorations. It was the thought. The quiet

  • rfisher23 on if You must be an awesome boss. I've had bosses that I would move mountains for, and bosses I wouldn't take a they were on fire. Thanks for being on of the good ones, the world needs more good bosses. Give yourself a pat on the back, for people to pull money out of their own pocket to celebrate you... you're doing a great job caring for them on a daily basis.

  • Far-Sir1362 Please make sure you tell them how it made you feel and how much you appreciated it. Most of the reason people do stuff like this is because they want to make you feel special and appreciated, so letting them know it worked will make them feel happy too

  • missannthrope1 You treat your people with the respect and dignity that everyone deserves. That's how you pay them back. Good on you.

  • Booboobear84 While you pay them, so would someone else. They choose to work there. Keep looking for ways to make a great place to work, and they will too. You've got something special going on treasure it and protect it.

  • Strong-Landscape7492 I think that's an awesome indication of the culture you've created. If you want to keep that feeling alive, do little birthday celebrations for your staff when the time rolls around, or random surprises through the year. Clients pick up on this atmosphere too and it will probably lead to more referrals coming in!
