Wannabe reader claims to read 100 books a week thanks to AI book summarizing app: 'Fahrenheit 451 was non-fiction'

There are many who like to claim that we are in the middle of a growing literacy crisis, and to their credit, the evidence can seem compelling. It is no secret that most people only read when they pick up their phones, and even then, it had better be short sentences that don't get in the way of enjoying the slop factory. Fewer than half of parents read frequently to kids under the age of four, and more than half of US adults read at a 6th grade level or below.

It is a bleak state of affairs for the remaining wordcels out there, and it only feels more hopeless when we take the skyrocketing popularity of artificial intelligence into account. There is no need to read and write beyond the basics when a machine will more than happily do it for us, and not everybody is happy at the idea that this might become the new normal.

  • This is why a portion of the internet was upset when a woman claimed on TikTok that she had uncovered the ability to ‘read’ 100 books a week thanks to an AI-powered app that summarized the texts for her to listen to in a couple of minutes. If there was one thing that everyone was united on, it was that this couldn't be counted as reading, and in a lot of ways, defeated the purpose of doing so. It doesn't take an avid reader to know that getting through the whole unabridged text is a pretty vital part of the process that is being skipped over here.

  • Maria Moita @Moita93 I don't know who needs to hear this, but it's okay to be a slow reader. You don't need techniques (like trying not to hear the voices in your head) just to read faster. Do you enjoy reading? Great. That's it. Enjoy the process. Re-read the paragraph. Hear the voices.
