AITAH for claiming a campsite that was first come first serve.

Am I the hole for thinking that a clearly marked "free" camping site would be considered "occupied" and unavailable if MY niece's car is occupying the site?
  • 03
Here's the story. My sweet niece who is an introvert occupied a camp site the evening she arrived at the camp ground.
  • 04
According to the rules. the sites are first come, first serve. Therefore, she arrived, occupied the site, slept in her car with her doggy and was visiting the lake with the rest of us (who all had our own sites.
  • 05
With our trailers). We were then informed by one of our family members that a couple had driven around the campground, was unsuccessful at finding a spot, pulled into the camping spot where my niece had the car and literally set up shop.
  • 06
All and I mean ALL of their camping gear was set up. Tent, table, boxes of firewood, sleeping equipment etc.
  • 07
We quickly informed them that the site was occupied by our family member who was a private person and had her belongings in the car so they wouldn't get stolen.

The woman and I quote said, "you are not validating my reality. The site looked unoccupied and so we thought that we could just, share it"
  • 10
I then responded with, "no ma'am. An occupied site requires a car in the site. It does not mean you can just pull up and start using a site simply because a person doesn't have their stuff out.

So, that's the story. There are a few other details BUT they are not important. I just want to know if I'm the a**hole for standing up for my niece and the site she clearly occupied with her car and the things in her car?

quick_justice So your family was occupying 5 campsites with 9 cars out of how many? And you are not saying how many of you were there? YTA, plain and simple.
  • 13
scubadog123456 OP We are 4 separate households with at least three people in each
  • 14
Middle-Accountant-49 9 cars for 12 people of what max 15? That is insane.

    Campsite on the water
  • 16
scubadog123456 OP Never said nine cars there where 4 trucks and 2 suvs and only two vehicles allowed per site however 2 of the sites you couldnt fit more than one vehicle
  • 17
Obvious Amphibian270 First she says the site did not look occupied, then she said they decided to "share". Wasn't the parked car a blatant sign someone was using the site? And how do you "share" when the other person was not consulted?

Lillyharper96 NTAH car is parked space is reserved. What was she expecting you to just have it instantly move first thing.

No-Giraffe49 NTA whether there was camping equipment unloaded by your niece at that site is not material to the issue. I'd be looking for a park ranger to tell them to vacate that spot. Some people have a lot of nerve.

Championship|||5535 Your niece was not camping. therefore the other people, who were doing it correctly were the rightful campers. your introverted ( does this have to do with anything) niece should have left.

Enigmatic_wobble NTA at all lol some people are delusional with entitlement and it blows my mind
  • 22
Successful-Coffee885 NTA of course. All the same, I always put a camp stove and a couple of things out on the picnic table where I camp just to make it clear I'm there—especially because I might drive away. Saves worry.

Radiant Gene1077 NTA. Wow I think I'm going to try that. Do whatever the h II want and then tell anyone who objects that they aren't validating my reality.oh boy.
