Things I wish every new dog owner knew (nobody tells you this)

    Dog and owner training
  • 02
I've helped train a lot of dogs over the years, and these are the 10 things that make the BIGGEST difference:
  • 03
    1. Your dog isn't being "stubborn" they're confused. If they don't get it, break the task into smaller steps.
  • 04
    2. Dogs repeat what gets rewarded. 1 second after the behavior = perfect timing.
  • 05
    3. Most barking comes from boredom or anxiety, not dominance.
  • 06
    4. Puppy biting is normal. Redirect → reward calm → no yelling.
  • 07
    5. Crate training isn't cruel. It gives structure and reduces stress.

    6. Leash pulling isn't about strength it's about impulse control.
  • 10
    7. Training in short 5-minute sessions works better than 1 long session.
  • 11
    8. Socialization before 4 months prevents 80% of future behavior issues.
  • 12
    9. Your routine is the real trainer. Feed, walk, play at consistent times.
  • 13
    10. Confidence > fear-based corrections. A dog who trusts you learns faster.

If this helps anyone, that's a win. If you want, I can also share checklists, housebreaking steps, or puppy routines - just ask.
  • 16
    bchappp And training never stops.
  • 17
No000obstah I more or less agree on everything else, but oh boy do stubborn dogs exist. And nobody can make me believe otherwise.
  • 18
Vashdaxtampide A good one to add to the list for reactive/nervous dogs: . • your dog is not giving you a bad time, they're having a bad time.
  • 19
Analyst-Effective You make some good points, however you should also say that when you tell your dog to do something, it is a command, not a suggestion.
  • 20
Every command needs to be enforced. And if you are not consistent, you will not have a trained dog
  • 21
Ok-Neat-1956 Exactly. Building that trust at home is so important. You have to teach dog to relax when being handled. Wrap your arms around and immobilize and teach them that it's a safe place and
  • 22
expect them to be calm. Up the ante as training goes. Snatch them up at height of excitement and decide you need to check their paw..... So when an injury occurs, your dog is already used to you
  • 23
handling them.... They relax and allow you to help them. I could care less if a dog doesn't want to be my friend. I have to do mean things and don't sleep w them or feed them everyday. I feel honored
  • 24
when a nervous dog eats my treats. I LOVE when an owner can handle their own pet. I will do anything to accommodate the most terrifying dog if the owner has a good relationship
  • 25
with that dog. The problem is that 98.8% of people can't 'handle' their dog. Also- I would love a sign wa dumpster saying place retractable leashes here.
  • 26
Powerful_Put5667 You wouldn't expect a young child to take on a full training course it's a puppy you have time.
  • 27
nohelicoptersplz I'd add that socialization is not just letting your dog meet people and play with other dogs. It's getting them to experience as many different things, sounds, textures (walking, not eating), clothing styles, etc as possible in a way that builds confidence.
