'This gorgeous void has a habit of breaking into my house': A friendly black cat keeps slipping inside, settling in for cuddles, and convincing a family that this might be more than just random visits

A new house, a very confident black cat, and suddenly everyone's emotions are involved. This cat keeps letting itself inside like it already has a key, settles in for cuddles, and now has a small injury that makes the whole situation harder to ignore. Once an animal is hurt and asking for attention, it's almost impossible not to feel responsible.

There's a real effort here to do the right thing. No one is rushing to claim the cat, even though it clearly feels at home and this home owner's child is convinced this is a Christmas miracle delivered straight from the Cat Distribution System. At the same time, sending an injured cat back outside right before the holidays feels wrong. With the vet closed for a few days and travel plans coming up, every option comes with a knot in the stomach.

It's a very familiar kind of dilemma. Keeping the cat overnight feels like the right thing to do, but risky if it belongs to someone nearby. There's no perfect answer, just a balancing act between caution and compassion. 

No matter how it turns out, the cat chose a safe place to wander into. It found people who cared about its well being and treated it gently. Whether this ends in a reunion or something more permanent, it's hard not to feel like the cat knew exactly where it wanted to be.

    Today it came in with my kid when he got home, and we noticed it has a wound on its front leg. It has very much made itself comfortable and is seeking a lot of cuddles and attention. On the other hand it could well belong to a neighbour. very

    I don't have time to go around knocking on doors as I'm going to my parents' for Christmas, and no vet is open for the next 3 days to check for a chip.

    Should I keep it overnight considering its wound and then knock on the neighbours' doors tomorrow, or should I let it out and hope it has a home to return to? I don't think the wound needs acute treatment at the moment, but I'd feel terrible if it developed into something bad.

    SnowHyo Very much appreciate you considering that this may be someone else's cat! What you can do is keeping the cat inside and tending to it while searching for the owner. They're easier to find if their cat is in fact missing, but it's also unlikely that this kitty does have a home. Check for a chip at the vet when possible!

  • Definitely check for a chip when you can, just to be safe. That’s always the best first step before assuming anything. But if there’s no chip and no one comes forward, it might just mean this cat chose you. Sometimes they really do decide where they belong.

    FancyPigeonlsFan... At the very least, keep him for the night before you seek out any (unlikely but possible) owner. He's injured and clearly coming to you and your home for comfort and safety. Don't turn him away. on Christmas Eve!

    Psychological_Ad... See if you have a local rescue/foster house. My area has an active lost pets facebook and several members have chip checkers. Also the local humane society may be open and would have a chip. checker.

  • This really does feel like a Christmas Cat Distribution System miracle. The timing, the confidence, the way it just walked in like it belonged there already. If there was ever a season for a cat to quietly choose a home, this feels exactly like it. Sometimes the universe sends gifts with whiskers.

    Good_Light_304 Keep the little kitty till you can check for a chip. If someone allows their cat to be an outdoor cat, they will be fine missing them for a day or two. I had indoor/outdoor cats growing

    up (I would never do this now) and they would regularly go missing. It's better that this kitty is safe and loved, rather than out on the streets.

    Tempest-Melodys That is likely someone's cat that got out and followed the friendliest human it could find for help, I recommend takeing them to the vet so they can look for a implanted tag/maybe get a little treatment for the injury.

    Serious-Yellow8163 I think you should keep the cat inside and take care of the wound. Bad things could happen to them (her?) if they're out lost and hurt. Tomorrow you can knock on some doors and post on social media. If they don't have an owner already, then this is your child's Christmas gift from the universe!

  • Maybe he used to live there and is just picking up where he left off. Or maybe he’s just very confident about housing. Either way, he clearly knows how to get in and feels comfortable enough to stay. It’s hard not to think there’s some kind of history there.
