  • Got written up for leaving on time after they denied my PTO request

I requested next Friday off three weeks ago for my kids school thing. Manager approved it in the system then calls me yesterday saying I need to cancel because two people called out sick and they need
  • coverage. I told her it was already approved and I made commitments. She said the needs of the business come first.

  • So today I left at 5pm when my shift ended. Didn't stay late like I normally do. Got called into her office this morning and written up for not being flexible and leaving when the team
  • needed me. I asked how I was supposed to know they needed. me when my shift was over and she said I should have checked in before leaving.

  • The same manager who told me I cant have my approved day off is now mad I didnt work extra unpaid hours. I've been here four years and never called out sick once. I'm done being a team player when they clearly don't give a shit about me. Already updating my resume.
  • bluebird6878 Start documenting everything and keep that PTO approval email. Writing you up for leaving at your scheduled time after they revoked approved time off is textbook retaliation, and if they try anything else you'll have a nice paper trail for a lawyer or the labor board.
  • OP AhoyMatey05 I saved everything including the original approval and her voicemail telling me to cancel it. My coworker also heard the whole conversation this morning when she wrote me up. I'm honestly hoping they fire me at this point so I can collect unemployment while I find something better.
  • Mystic Marbles You mean collect a large settlement, right?
  • OP Ahoy Matey05 Honestly yeah, if they fire me over this my coworker already said she'd be willing to give a statement. I never thought about actually going that route but the more I think about it the more pissed off I get.
  • ElTupacabraXXX They are used to taking advantage of you if you work unpaid hours for them.
  • OP AhoyMatey05 No kidding. I've been staying late 2 or 3 times a week for years thinking it mattered and all it did was teach them they can walk all over me. Never again.
  • SierraStar7 1. Was HR involved with this write up? 2. Have you ever checked in before leaving to ask if help was needed? 3. Were you ever told by your manager or HR that it is required to check in before leaving for the day if help was needed?
  • FROG123076 I had a boss mention to me once about how I leave right at 5:00. I told him I do not work for free and they don't pay overtime. If you want me to stay then pay me. He shut up and never said a word again.
  • PeachPlug- Exactly this. HR isn't your friend, but documentation is. Paper trail > vibes every time. They'll fold the second a lawyer sees that PTO approval email.
  • Lorelessone In the UK we give advanced notice of PTO, there's usually no "request" involved unless it's an emergency or critical role suck as a doctor or fire fighter, maybe national grid engineers etc. It's wild the things Americans put up with, like the rich there are still pissed off about not being allowed to own slaves anymore and are constantly trying to get as close to it as they can with workers made to beg customers for their pay like old unpaid ex- slave train service staff.
