For many people, walking past a stranger requires advanced social calculations: Do we nod? Smile? Small talk? Pretend we urgently remembered something on our phone? Humans come with complex social rules, unpredictable reactions, and the possibility of prolonged conversation.
Animals, on the other hand, are refreshingly honest. A dog approaching you is either friendly, curious, or clearly uninterested - all easy to decode. There’s also something called the “baby schema” effect: features like big eyes, round faces, and soft textures trigger nurturing responses in our brains. Many animals check those boxes effortlessly. Add to that the fact that animals don’t judge your outfit, your career path, or that awkward thing you said in 2014. Interacting with them often lowers stress and boosts feel-good hormones, while human interactions can sometimes raise social anxiety.
So the instinct makes sense: animals feel emotionally safe and simple. Humans require software updates and conversational stamina.

When it comes to spending, logic quietly exits the room the moment a dog is involved. From a psychological perspective, dogs occupy a category similar to close family members in many households. We feel responsible for their well-being because, quite literally, they depend on us for everything - food, healthcare, enrichment, comfort. That dependency activates caregiving instincts and strengthens emotional bonds. Studies show that people often prioritize spending on loved ones over themselves, and dogs squarely fall into that “loved one” category. There’s also immediate feedback: buy yourself a sweater, you get… a sweater. Buy your dog a new toy, you get tail wagging, zoomies, and unfiltered joy. That positive reinforcement is powerful. Meanwhile, we tend to rationalize skipping our own upgrades because we can tolerate discomfort. Our dogs cannot order their own orthopedic beds. So we open the wallet.
The financial restraint is optional. Happy dog, though, is essential.
