Gym-goer at their "breaking point" over social media users filming their workouts: 'It's a gym, not a production set'

  • Woman lifts kettleball at the gym.
  • I think tripod culture finally broke me. I’m considering paying stupid money just to escape it.

I had a literal breaking point at my gym yesterday. I waited 15 minutes for a cable tower while a girl filmed three different angles of her glute kickbacks.
  • When I finally asked if I could work in, she looked at me like I insulted her ancestors because I'd ruin her "shot".
  • I'm genuinely losing my mind. It's a gym, not a production set. I'm so exhausted by it that I'm legitimately looking into dropping an embarrassing amount of cash on this strict private setup a coworker told me about, literally for no other reason than their number one rule is that taking a camera out gets you banned immediately.
  • Fitness influencer snaps selfie before starting her workout.
  • No spas, no aesthetics, just heavy weights and zero influencers. Have any of you rage-quit commercial gyms over the filming stuff?
  • I feel insane for even considering paying premium rates just to lift in complete silence, but I don't know how much more of the ring-light brigade I can take.
  • Impossible-Ask-7560 I found a really new and EMPTY gym one day. It was super modern and trendy but I guess word just wasn't out for whatever reason. I enjoyed three glorious months of empty gym (yes, even at 5pm) and then one day a tripod guy shows up. Then another. Once word got out, I couldn't find a corner where I wasn't being filmed somehow and actually was in several people's social media posts. Quit that gym expeditiously. I think they need to have no filming rules in most gyms.
  • Specific-Composer300 Gyms need to start banning filming.
  • FakeOutdoorsy I pay good $$$ for my gym membership. While there is the occasional person filming their set, the gym is almost always 50-75% empty, everything is organized and stocked, and I can always get the equipment I need. What used to take me 1.5-2 hrs to finish doing bc of all the waiting around and having to look for equipment, I could get done in 30-45 mins now. It's 10000% worth every penny.
  • Ok_Visit_7846 This is one reason why I quit going to the gym and built one at home.
  • Go ahead, walk through their shots! It adds to the realism

niles_thebutler_ I just walk straight through their cameras and shots and don't give a single f
  • This will especially work if this person shares that the filming is the reason they're thinking of leaving

Replicant28 I would at least reach out to management to talk to them about this. If they do something, great! And if not, you can vote with your wallet and let them know you are leaving that gym. Chances are, you are not the only one who has dealt with this and feel the same way.
  • Mintiichoco I go to a commercial gym at 5am with all the senior citizens. The only thing taken is 2 cables and all the floor treadmills. I've never seen one phone out for more than a minute but I do get a good morning every single day sprinkled with random life advice. Go when the senior citizens go. Always between 4-550am. 6am you start getting more people.
  • upthemstairs | go to a local gym, it's pretty small and it's not got the most modern equipment. What it does have is several signs saying "no photographs allowed. Any member found taking photos/videos in the gym will have their membership deactivated". Everyone is polite to one another. People allow others to work in. Weights are put back and all machines are wiped down after use
  • WHAT?!

FluffySpell I saw a sign this morning at my gym that they're closing the basketball court. I asked the guy at the desk what they're putting in it's place and he said they're turning it into an "influencer area." Which...great, keep them and their stupid tripods all in one spot and out of our way but at the same time I'm annoyed like you couldn't have put something there that's useful for EVERYONE?
