  • I (20F) was traveling with a friend (21F) this weekend and she is one of those people who is chronically late.
  • Like every plan we make, she's at least an hour behind and acts like it's no big deal.
  • We've been friends since we were kids so that's really the only reason I put up with it.
  • Our flight was at 9:30 AM and I assumed boarding closed at like 9:10. I told her multiple times the night before that we needed to leave by 7:15 because the airport is about an hour away and I didn't want to cut it close.
  • At 7:15 she wasn't ready. At 7:30 she was still "looking for her shoes." At 7:45 she suddenly decided she needed coffee and snacks and sh for the plane and insisted we stop at a gas station on the way.
  • At that point I was already stressed about the time but I pulled in because she said she'd be two minutes.
  • She went inside and I waited. And waited. After about 8 minutes I texted asking if she was almost done because we were pushing it.
  • She replied "hold on." Another 5 minutes passed and she still wasn't back. I called her and she said she'd run into someone she knew and was talking.
  • (TALKING?? we had a FLIGHT to catch. like a PLANE.) At that point it was 8:05 and we were still 40 minutes from the airport.

  • So I texted her I was leaving and she needed to come out. She read it immediately so I waited about 60 more seconds and then I left.
  • She came running out while I was pulling away and started calling me over and over.
  • I answered once and told her I was not missing a flight because she decided to socialize at a gas station.
  • I made it to the airport with about 15 minutes to spare before boarding closed it was the closest I've ever come to missing a flight because I am ON TIME to everything in my life.
  • She obviously missed the flight and had to pay to rebook later that day. Now she's furious and telling people I "stranded her at a gas station an hour from home." Our mutual friends are split because technically I did leave her there.
  • But from my perspective she already made us late leaving the house and then stayed inside the store chatting when we were about to miss a flight.
  • 89Rae ESH. You continually strung her along "we need to leave at x time" and then you continued to just going along with her delays. You were already running late when she asked you stop at the gas station, you were driving you could have said 'no'.
  • Journalist-Early A gentle ESH for the fact that you could have been more strict from the get go as in leaving her at the house at 7.30. Instead you gave in to her more and more and she took advantage of you. If you still want to keep this friendship, avoid making any travel plans with her.

  • takuarc You should have left her at her house...
  • Ibkulpa You're NTA but could you have said no we are not stopping at the gas station?
  • Maiden_Far Once you were moving, there was no reason for you to stop. I would've just kept driving to the airport and told her she can get coffee when we were there.
  • Regular_Bus5534 Side note: did you leave with her luggage? Did she end up flying to the same place as you? if so. Was it awkward?
  • Old_Badger311 I travel out of O'hare. I have a completely different perspective. That being said you did exactly the right thing. NTA. I would have left her too.
  • Barnes777777 NTA, she learned the definition of FAFO. She fooled around and found out. Plus side if all real OP has the receipts of how her friend messed up with the actual time stamps on the calls/texts. Like the friends shouldn't be given the one left at the gas station a wake up call that the world doesn't revolve around her.
