All-star employee denied a promotion until 2028 for being too good at her job, but she won’t let her boss off so easily: 'I'm being punished for doing better work'

Being good at your job is supposed to open doors, but not every workplace rewards competence the way it should.

Unfortunately, some workplaces only add more responsibilities without real opportunities to grow. You can be incredibly hardworking and remain stuck in the same role for years. So let's get to the root of the question: why do people work? Of course, we work to make a living, but beyond that, most of us also want to grow, move forward, succeed in our professional lives. Work gives us a sense of progress and allows us to improve our standard of living, so that's why it should support your growth, not hold you back.

  • Hard work will always lead you somewhere. You just have to recognize when you're no longer in the right place to grow. Every job has something to teach us, and we can learn something from every workplace and every coworker. But there comes a point in some jobs where there's no more room to learn. You hit a ceiling. That doesn't mean that it's your limit, but the limit of what that environment can give you. When that happens, it's a sign to move forward!

  • Even if you're correcting your incompetent coworkers, I believe your efforts are never wasted. Every experience builds skills you'll use in your next opportunity. You learn from every situation, and those experiences prepare you for what's coming next. You also have to notice when it's time to stop and move on. Well, recognizing that staying is no longer helping you grow is also part of the process.

  • Discussing things with your boss is the first step you can take to change a dynamic that's not working for you. I would also consider talking to my coworkers, but starting with your manager can be enough. It's important to at least try to speak up, and if they care, they will listen and try to find a solution that works for everyone.

  • Edit: I have talked to my boss about feeling overwhelmed with my workload, and their solution was to give a certain portion to coworker A. However, no matter how many times I tell A how to do it correctly,

  • he does it wrong and my boss makes me fix all of it, so it really hasn't decreased my workload at all. I am documenting all my conversations and will schedule a call with my boss to try and sort this out again.

  • If that conversation hasn't solved anything, then it's time to renegotiate and analyze your options. If you like your job and you want to be there, speaking up when something feels wrong is KEY. There might still be a way to improve the situation, so it's worth trying. Then, if nothing changes and you don't reach an agreement… Remember you're not stuck. You can always choose to move forward.

  • VFTM Ask your boss what you should put on hold so that you can correct the errors of your colleagues. Don't work harder, work smarter. You can definitely do the babysitting that he's asking, but you can't do that efficiently on top of your own work so something's gonna have to fail.
