I drove 13 hours to attend my class reunion and ended up being the only person who showed up besides the girl who planned it.

On the bright side, it actually seems like this seemingly pathetic version of a high school reunion was actually less scarring and damaging than it would have been if everyone had shown up. I remember what it was like going to my five-year reunion. Sure, not that much time had passed, and yet, enough had changed in my life that it felt particularly bizarre to have to be trapped in a conversation with people who weren't necessarily the kindest to you back in the day.
It's easy in these tough social situations to revert to unhealthy dynamics and behavior, so why do most of us bother going to these reunions? The people who tend to be excited about them are often the folks who have yet to move on from high school. In this instance, however, these two women ended up finding it within themselves to laugh at the whole thing.
After all, it's amusing that these two now had to pretend to enjoy one another's company when no one else was present. That laughter ended up actually breaking the ice, thereby allowing both parties to let their guards down and be honest with one another about the trials and tribulations of their current adult lives. Yes, somehow, an actual new friendship was born out of a high school reunion for once.
