  • Boss asking me to shave my beard.

Am I the a h le for being upset about this? I started a new job in an industrial plant two months ago. I showed up for the interview with a full beard and was given the offer. I reviewed my job contract and there was no mention of being required to shave.
  • Suddenly two months in (with a beard), my boss says it's a rule that I have to be clean shaven. I feel the same way about my beard as others do about the hair on their head, Infact I'd rather shave my head than my beard.
  • I respect safety, and if they had let me know this beforehand I would've politely refused the offer, but the failed to do so in the interview, in the contract and in the whole two months I was here with a beard. I totally understand that it is for my own safety, and I'm not upset about the policy. I am just upset they never once disclosed this when they knew it was a requirement all along.
  • Commenters had questions and opinions.

Blackberry_Initial Do you work with any nasty stuff where you need to wear any kind of filtered dust masks or respiratorators? Those require clean shaved face in order for them to work properly.

  • SpecificSkunk I work at an industrial plant and they should have notified you during the interview. If we have men come in with beards we always ask if they're willing to accept that the job requires a clean shave for
  • any task that requires respirators, and there may not be much notice so you just have to be clean shaven every day (and/or keep a razor in your locker).
  • They may have forgotten but it's a pretty gross oversight on their part, especially if the interviewee has no prior industrial work experience around hazardous substances.
  • Edit to add: unfortunately in your situation there's not much they can do if your job requires respirator use. They can't really give you a pass as it'll lead to accusations of preferential treatment, so you'll have to shave or find different employment. Sh situation, sorry bud.
  • Out_of_ughs Look at the state laws. If it's there then it has nothing to do with them.
  • mikedidathing They should've mentioned something to you when they interviewed/hired you. With that, you need to: 1. Get a copy of the most. recent employee handbook and read it.
  • 2. See if there are any government regulations regarding beards in your work environment. 3. Regardless of the first two, you probably need to look for another job, as it's kinda stupid they're telling you this
  • 2 months into the job. Who knows what kinda shenanigans will continue to pop up throughout your employment there?
  • Hulknout2021 Have you gone through the employee manual and/or work rules? Find it in print..if it is, then shave that bad boy. My plant has a rule against long beards but there is no defined limit.
  • knight714 "My faith requires me to keep a beard" "Which faith is that?" "I'm not obligated to share that with my employer"
  • imping64 Sorry OP, I know what you're going through as a beard person myself in the chemical industry. Luckily, my current position does not require me to wear a full face mask at this time. Are
  • you able to request to wear a hooded PAPR instead since the task is fairly infrequent? This is what we do in my plant. Could be brought up a Safety Committee meeting or something.
  • Playonwords329 if its a deal breaker then quit if not shave... what is there to discuss
  • miggismallz33 S ks, but since you feel strongly about your beard you will have to resign.
  • vampyrewolf Worked in the oilsands for 2.5 years, was allowed a closely trimmed beard or goatee for the fit rest. The other concern they could have would be long hair and beards getting caught in equipment. Anything that rotates is a problem.
