If you can't explain it to a Victorian child, it doesn't count

I'm amazed by the quantity of stories that exist today that fifteen years ago would've been unthinkable, or at least absolutely dystopian. I remember watching the movie Her, and while I was crying, I was like, c'mon, this can't happen to anyone. Mind you, this is coming from somebody who's deeply dependent on ChatGPT. What I don't understand is how people actually humanize it. In this case, I'm not sure if a relationship with an LLM counts as a relationship, as the groom says. But to each his own, right?

  • I’m sure this story has more to it. Either the woman wasn’t very eager to get married in the first place, or the groom was doing something else on top of having an AI girlfriend. Don’t get me wrong; I think this is a serious issue, but it’s definitely not THAT serious. An AI model will never disagree with you; ‘she’ will always find you funny, interesting, intelligent- that’s precisely why I don’t consider that a real relationship. Or as the man puts it, ‘it doesn’t count. People talk to AI when they want somebody to tell them what they want to hear, and I don’t think that’s terrible; it can even be a positive, intimate space, like talking to yourself but a little more interactive.

  • I understand it got weird and dystopian when he gave her a female name, but one is allowed to have fantasies, right? The chatbot is not a real person; it’s just like a videogame. Would it have been any different if he had the same fantasy relationship in his imagination rather than on his computer? This is what I don’t like about invading your partner’s privacy, because now that she saw that, she can’t unsee it, and it will affect her, but still, what she saw was far from infidelity.
