Homeowner witnesses their neighbor attaching his hose to their backyard spigot as soon as they leave their home, proceeding to fill his pool for 30 minutes: 'What would you have done?'

"Neighbour helped himself to my outside tap minutes after I left the house"

I popped out for a bit and, literally minutes after I left, my neighbour wandered into my back yard, hooked up his hose to my outside tap and started filling his pool. Got the whole thing on camera. He used my water for about 30 minutes without even asking.

When I went round later, he first denied it, then changed his story and apologised with a pretty rubbish excuse. Honestly, I couldn't believe someone would think that was okay. I've now had to put a padlock on my outside tap because apparently that's what it takes. Anyone else dealt with neighbours like this? What would you have done?

tammybiscuits Go round and use his pool! LimeDue3897 OP I was thinking that!
kmflushing Charge him for it.

Practical-Camp-9533 In many jurisdictions, this is an actual crime. You can call the non emergency line and report the crime and have your neighbor issued a formal trespass notice. To be clear, your neighbor stole something of value. They did this so you would pay the water bill for their pool. They are not your friends. They are not good members of your neighborhood. They are thieves who are willing to steal from you and should be treated as such. If they don't own the home, contact the landlor
emryldmyst I wouldn't be letting this go. He trespassed and stole from you. If he came onto your property and stole a package on your porch... Same thing. Edit... Offer him to pay for it or you'll press charges
Pianowman Yes. Went on vacation once and came back to a water bill way higher than usual. We know that when we left, the neighbor's huge above ground pool was empty. When we came back, it was full. We had no proof it was them. It was back in the day when security cameras were rare. The water company said we had to pay it and that we needed to check for leaks. The next billing cycle, our bill was normal.

Katiew84 This is theft. Call the police and file a police report. They will take it seriously. And I'd demand reimbursement from the neighbor. If he refuses, take him to small claims court. It's the principle.
Euphoric-Piglet-8140 Like meself, OP appears to be British. You will need to report the water theft to your water company so you don't get overcharged - 30 minutes of constant water would be a few quid on the meter I'd warrant.
Grant Winner_Extra Take him to small clams court over it. If you have an HOA, lodge a complaint.
