Manager forgot to schedule employee for 2 weeks, tries to write them up for his own mistake, but the employee refuses to sign: ‘What was I supposed to improve?’

I work part-time retail while finishing school. Two weeks ago I checked the schedule app and saw I had zero shifts. Figured it was a glitch, so I messaged my manager. No response. Messaged
again three days later. Still nothing. So I did what any reasonable person would do: I assumed I wasn't needed and focused on finals.

Fast forward to yesterday. Manager pulls me into the back office and slides a write-up across the table. Reason? "Failure to meet minimum shift availability." I stared at him for a solid five seconds.

I pulled out my phone and showed him the screenshots of my messages. His response? "Well, you should have come in person."

Come in. In person. To a store | wasn't scheduled at. During hours I wasn't on the clock. To ask why I wasn't on the schedule that he makes.

I pointed out that he's the one who controls the schedule. He said "that's not the point."
via No-Spring-4682
Then what IS the point? Because from where I'm standing, the point seems to be that I'm being disciplined for his clerical error.

And somehow I'm the one who has to sign a document acknowledging "areas for improvement."

I didn't sign it. Told him I'd be happy to discuss once he could explain what I was supposed to improve. He told me to "think about my attitude."

So now I'm sitting at home, staring at a blank shift calendar for next week, wondering if I should just quit before they find another imaginary metric to fail me on.

Anyone else been written up for something that was literally impossible to do?

Inevitable-Cloud-508 The write-up is an attempt to cya and justify their actions because they expected you to file for unemployment for being off the schedule. If they had wanted you on the schedule you would have been.

tenakee_me Yeah. So this is a situation - one in which you sound willing to find another job and don't give that much of a care about this one - where I'd escalate it to HR.

Raenef86 Dear HR, I would like to get confirmation on weather I have to manage my manager or not as part of my work duties, I thank you for the clarification

perrance68 I was written up because cash register was missing like 10$. But everyone who was using that register that day was written up. The manager had to write himself up too.

Gonpostlscott Contact your HR department and tell them what is going on. Your manager is an idiot

Donut_Hole_8838 "I didn't sign it." D_IN RIGHT! Don't sign that sh and look for another job. Any kind of imagined rhyme or reason illustrated by other comments don't matter. All that matters is you and your life and your goals. Fighting it will just S k up your time, mind, health, and soul - and those are yours, protect them!
