If you are rather short in stature, just get a step stool to get the mugs off the top shelf. Do not attempt to simply reach up high for them, stretching up on your toes, and swat at the handles. The mug will slip past your fingers and fall, hitting you in the face on the way down, and will smash your toes as it crashes on the floor.
