We can all agree that 2020 has been a strange year to say the least. All the way back in January when we thought world war 3 was going to break out to now a pandemic, and of course, politics. It feels like every day, we're confronted with different political scandals and stories, and sometimes we wish we could just... turn off the news without them following us. Today, in our animal world on Cheezburger, we are celebrating a special holiday - Dog in Politics Day.
We know, we know, more politics?! But this is special, we promise. Dogs in politics is something incredibly special and heartwarming, and elected dog mayors are even more adorable than most. On top of that, they are the easiest candidates ever to pick. I mean... they may get a little dictatorial and make all of us give them treats and rub their bellies endlessly, but their commands are ones we are more than happy to fulfill.
So, on this special day, we are showcasing all of the dogs in the US who have been elected mayors - dogs who spend their lives serving the American public and making sure that all of our lives are rebarkable!
Possibly the best campaign ad of all. This doggo looks like a great candidate to us. It is one we're definitely rooting for, crossing our fingers that he will be elected. Let's get started with our doggo mayors.
As Insider reports, a black Labrador-Rottweiler named Bosco was the mayor or Sunol, California from 1981 to 1994. To win his first election, he defeated two humans. The Mercury News reported at the time that Bosco ran as a "re-pup-lican" with campaign promises such as this: "a bone in every dish, a cat in every tree, and a fire hydrant in every corner." He served as mayor for 13 whole years! In the picture is a statue erected in his memory.
This border collie was elected as the first female mayor of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. Lucy Lou ran on the slogan: "the b***h you can count on," won, and ended up serving from 2008 to 2016. In 2016, she tried to run for president, stepping down from her role as mayor, but unfortunately lost.
Lucy Lou's successor in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky was a pit bull. It was a tough competition. He was running up against a cat and a donkey, but Brynneth's voters were passionate, and he won.
A golden retriever, Max, "also known as Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II" took the seat in 2013 from another golden retriever also called Max. He always dresses with a tie, and sometimes, he even wears a hat. A true professional for us to support.
This adorably fluffy Great Pyrenees was first elected mayor in 2014. He then went on to be reelected three times. In his 2016 run, "every vote cast was for him, except for one that went to his girlfriend, Lassie." The job must have really put a strain on their relationship, but at least we know that the community loved him.
A bloodhound was elected mayor in Colorado in 2014. His competition was also rough, having to go up against a donkey, hedgehog, cat, wolf, and many other dogs. "It was a narrow victory. He only beat Kenyi, the wolf, by 55 votes. Kenyi became Pa Kettle's vice-mayor."
This little female Chihuahua may have only been mayor for one day, but her reign was definitely impactful. She "became the most powerful dog in San Francisco in 2014." As predicted, she, quite dictatorially, requested mandatory belly rubs. We would have given them to her though.
In 2018, Gus was elected mayor in an incredible victory. There were 20,000 people who voted in that election, and he won just half of them.
Parker the Snow Dog was unanimously elected as the honorary mayor of Georgetown on February 11th, 2019. This adorable dog is also the mascot of Loveland Ski Area, and he is quite famous in his area. His politics included: "hugs, love, and cookies to the people of Georgetown."
