When we're little, it always seems like the coolest thing in the world to have roommates. No parents, no rules, and you get to live with your friends? Sign us up! But, once you get there and actually start living the roommate life, things are never as glamorous as you thought they'd be. The all-night video game parties rarely happen anymore, and if they do it's a game you don't want to play, and it's being played way too loud in the living room while you want to sleep. Or, you think that you and your roommates will be able to eat whatever you want– but then you realize that first of all, food costs money and second of all, someone needs to do the dishes. Plus, if you live with someone that isn't a good friend, and you and your roommate start having trouble seeing eye to eye, the whole living environment can become very toxic and unhealthy.
That seems to be what's happening in this situation that we stumbled on during a Reddit search this week. While perusing the AITA thread, we found a woman who's having some roommate issues of her own, and it all revolves around her roommate's disabilities, and her desire to get a service dog. Now, before you jump to conclusions (like we did), try to hear OP out. This thankfully isn't one of those situations where someone has done something terrible or wrong to someone else, it's just one of those times where two people have different opinions about what's appropriate for their living space. So, they decided to crowdsource the opinions of a bunch of strangers on the internet and see if that helped clear things up. What do you think though? Is this issue resolved?
First and foremost, it sounds like these two are already on the road to ruin. J is here living in OPs house, and even though OP doesn't act like she's angry at J, there's clearly a fragile power dynamic in place. Still, this first half of the post doesn't even get to the crux of the problem, which you'll read about in just a second.
So, now that we know that both J and OP have some serious medical issues they need to work out. But, OP drastically undersells J's issues by pretending that just barely getting along while having violent seizures is acceptable, and J clearly misunderstands the severity of OPs dog allergy when she calls it a matter of discomfort. We were leaning towards saying there were no asshole here when we started, but frankly, now we think everyone sucks.
