Weekly Internet Roundup: M&Ms Aren't Dead, Doja Cat Plays Dress Up, & Who's the Creep at the Gym?

Greetings, we're back for another week on the Internet Roundup. With so much happening online these days, it's easy to miss the important things that we need to be updated on. So, here's a short list of dumb new memes, controversies, and entertainment news that have captivated people all over. As usual, it's a mixed bag.

The M&Ms Mascots Are Not Actually Cancelled

Candy lovers and corporate America wept this week, after we apparently witnessed the end of an era. M&Ms have announced that their iconic family of spokescandies are going to be retired indefinitely, with Maya Rudolph replacing them as the face of the brand.

As the subject of countless memes and unsavory internet discussions over the years, many were understandably upset at the news. Plus, it looked like a win for Tucker Carlson.

It has to be said, it was mighty interesting how this bombshell announcement came out three weeks before the Superbowl, and during their parent company's ongoing lawsuit over child labor. It's little surprise that it's been announced that the entire thing was a marketing ploy. Nothing was ever going to top giving the Green M&M sneakers, anyway.

Doja Cosplays a Pimple

As female celebrities go, Doja has never shied away from getting supremely weird with it. Her reputation as one of the few pop singers who was probably right at home in 4chan's heyday has led to some interesting antics over the years, particularly when it comes to her appearance.

Fashion week is the perfect opportunity for somebody like her to showcase this, and her Parisian look did not disappoint. Dressed in (literal) head to toe Schiaparelli, her alarming outfit quickly became the subject of many memes. Just another day in the life for a part time musician, and full time troll.

The Twitch Partner and the Gym Weirdo

Being female isn't for the faint of heart. Pretty much every woman we know has multiple stories of unpleasantness that they've suffered because of their gender.

In recent years, the gym has become a notorious battleground in how men can display wildly inappropriate behavior when women are just trying to get their gains in piece. It's become common for female fitness influencers to share creepy or annoying encounters that they've had while filming themselves working out, often leading to outrage and debate.

TikToker and Twitch partner Jessica Fernandez appeared to be adding to the genre, when she posted a video calling out a “feral” “piece of sh*t” male gymgoer who she claimed was persistently staring at her as she exercised.

Gymfluencer Joey Swoll then picked up on the now-deleted TikTok. He argued that while the harassment of women in gyms was a real problem, this was not an example of it. His two cents prompted widespread uproar across the internet, leading to Fernandez apologizing for making a mistake. Callout culture is a messy and unforgiving beast, especially when it comes to sexual politics.

Return of M to the B

If there's one thing that keeps the transatlantic special relationship on good terms, it's that Great Britain knows how to pump out some memorable memes. Internet culture has a fondness for the miserable island nation's finer qualities, and one of Blackpool's premier grime artists is a perfect example of that.

Millie B burst onto the scene in 2016, gaining a viral YouTube hit for her scathing music video taking down rival Sophie Aspin. However, it wasn't until 2020 that things got completely out of control, after TikTokers discovered an infectious remix of the song. By this point, Millie had a daughter, and seemed to have given up music in favor of selling Avon.

Then, Kim K decided to revive the tune yet again, jumping on the trend of doing a stereotypical British makeup look while lip syncing to the sound.

After this high praise, the musical meme veteran had no choice but to come back with another song. Titled ‘Meant to Bee’, she clearly hasn't lost any of her flow.

So ends another edition of summarized internet news. Will we have forgotten all about most of the things discussed here in a few days' time? Probably. Still, we've enjoyed it and/or had something to be outraged at while it lasted. Here's to the continuation of the never-ending social media discourse cycle. Until next time!
